UK jobs at risk as Unilever plans closures

Hundreds of UK jobs have been placed at risk after Unilever announced it is to carry out a number of site closures.

The consumer goods company - which manufactures products such as PG Tips, Marmite and Persil - revealed it intends to shut its facilities in Swansea, Flintshire and Bridgend.

Such moves mean around 450 people may stand to lose their jobs, with 200 positions at its Ewloe IT centre to be removed, alongside 225 at its Swansea factory and 25 located at its distribution complex in Bridgend.

Amanda Sourry, chair of Unilever UK and Ireland, explained the uncertain economic conditions in Europe are limiting growth opportunities for the country.

Ms Sourry stated: "While Unilever is growing well in the UK and globally, it will always be necessary to make changes which raise our game and ensure our continued success."?

She added the planned alterations can pave the way for the firm to ensure its competitiveness and expansion in the long run.
