Gillmor Gang: Over the Freaky Line

Gillmor Gang test patternThe Gillmor Gang ? Robert Scoble, Kevin Marks, Keith Teare, John Taschek, and Steve Gillmor ? watched in amazement and not a little fear as Mike Arrington baited @Scobleizer from the Friendfeed chatroom. What started as a Mr. Greenjeans-like pulling of various Google I/O tablets and weird music balls from out of his pants suddenly went south in a hurry when @jtaschek noticed Arrington in the chat. Normally we don't call this out, but Robert's Rant starts at somewhere around the 36 minute mark. Arrington wanted us to make him a clip and a ringtone out of this, but it's late and I barely have enough energy to write this. Maybe tomorrow. Feel free to download the file on iTunes and cut Mike a version. Enjoy at your peril: Not safe for work or anything else for that matter.

Iran's dentist to the stars offers views on US

TEHRAN, Iran ? Prior to the Islamic revolution, Iran and America shared very good relations. The former Shah of Iran, Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, had an army with modern hardware supplied by the U.S. There were direct flights between New York City and Tehran and the city was full of hotels run by major American chains.

But the once-friendly relations between the two nations came to a screeching halt in 1979 when cleric-led radicals ousted the U.S.-backed shah and the subsequent Iran hostage crisis when 52 Americans were held in the U.S. embassy for 444 days.?

These days, Iranians? relations with America are somewhat schizophrenic ? the government is stridently anti-American, but many Iranians are not.?

That is the opposite of other countries in the region where governments receive large amounts of money and military hardware from the U.S., but whose people generally dislike America.

Tehran?s dentist to the stars
A popular dentist in an affluent part of Tehran represents the love-hate relationship many Iranians feel toward the U.S.

In his Park Avenue-style dental practice, the latest Newsweek, Time and Architectural Digest magazines are on offer in the waiting room. A large flat-screen TV sits on the wall, along with an expansive fish tank and a framed dentistry degree from New York University.?

Iranians are consumers who love brand names ? even when it comes to their dental care. When a friend of mine introduced me to the dentist, he told me he is the guy to go to if I wanted to brag about where I get my teeth cleaned. He is, in essence, Tehran?s equivalent of a Beverly Hills ?dentist to the stars.?

A large part of his reputation comes not just from the fact that he has all the latest, modern dentistry equipment, but that he was trained in the U.S. and offers Western-style service. He was educated in dentistry at NYU and lived, worked and studied from the East Coast to West Coast.

Reuters

Coffee mugs bearing pictures of the late Apple co-founder Steve Jobs are on sale as a man works on a MacBook at a shop in northern Tehran on Jan.19, 2012. Despite the fact that Apple observes a U.S. embargo that restricts the sale of their goods in Iran, their products are wildly popular there.

Sporting fashionable glasses, a crisp blue button-down shirt and tie, the dentist, who is in his mid-40s, agreed to speak with me on the condition of anonymity. ?

?I am who I am because of my education in the States,? said the dentist. ?I am very American, but my view on U.S. politics is very different.?

I asked him what he thought about the tough economic sanctions being imposed on Iran ? which block access to the international banking system and hurt?sales of Iranian crude oil ? as a way to persuade Tehran to abandon its nuclear program.

Iranians feel the pain of sanctions: 'Everything has doubled in price'

?Why are there sanctions against Iran?? he said. ?Wasn?t it America that helped Iran fire up its nuclear program 35 years ago? The sanctions just hurt ordinary people.??

At the same time, he praised Iranians? resilience.

?After 30 years of sanctions, embargoes, war and threats of war, Iran has kept its head above water,? he said. ?Most other countries would have collapsed, but Iranians have found ways to circumvent these problems; they help each other.?

NBC News speaks with citizens from around the globe, asking the question, 'What Does America Mean to You?'

The dentist believes that one reason for? misunderstanding between America and Iran is that Americans have little real information on Iran ? that they know only what they see on TV, which is often a very small part of the bigger picture.

For years, he says, he tried to convince American colleagues to give lectures on dentistry in Iran, but that they were reluctant to do so because of their perceptions. When one of them finally agreed to come, and experienced the famous Iranian hospitality and warmth, his perception of Iran changed very quickly.

Asked why he came back to Iran about eight years ago after spending most of his life in the States, he said he just felt like something was missing, adding that he loves Tehran because it?s like New York City ? a noisy, fast-paced 24/7 place.

Steve Jobs photos on the wall
The desire for brand names in Iran that signify Western quality goes beyond dentistry.?

Mohsen, who agreed to speak with me on condition that only his first name be used, owns an electrical goods store in Tehran selling mostly black market Apple products. (Typically, Apple, as well as other imported goods that would be subject to U.S. embargoes, come into Iran via Dubai and the Persian Gulf. They are sold openly in stores in Tehran).?

He said that most Iranians love American products and culture and that personally he longs for the day that the two countries have normal relations.

Then a frown appeared on his face. ?But,? he said, ?they do things that even rub a moderate person, like me, the wrong way.?

?I read an article yesterday about an Iranian-American who went into an Apple store in the States and wanted to buy an iPad to send to her uncle in Tehran. When the sales person found out she was Iranian and wanted to send the iPad to Iran, the store refused to sell it to her,? he said.

?This is crazy! I sell 50 iPads and iPhones here a week. I have a picture of Steve Jobs on the wall! These sorts of things don?t do any good for relations between Iranian and American people.??

The story Mohsen related was widely reported in the U.S. An Apple employee in Atlanta declined to sell an iPad to an Iranian-American customer, citing company policy that aims to comply with U.S. trade sanctions with Iran that can lead to individual fines of up to $250,000. ?

Iran trade sanctions get personal in Apple stores??

In the meantime, Mohsen?s Apple products will have to remain on the black market.?

Still, not all Iranians have such a moderate view towards the U.S. Hussein, a hard-line student at Tehran University, has a very negative view of the States. (He also spoke on condition that only his first name be used.)

?All America has done is try to bully Iran, chip away at its nuclear rights and steal our oil,? Hussein said.

?I don?t think we should be talking to the Americans because ultimately they want our demise,? he said. ?Throughout history, they have interfered in our country, only harming us. We have nothing in common.?

This story is part of a series by msnbc.com and NBC News?"What the World Thinks of US". The series aims to check the pulse on current perceptions of America's global stature during the election year and ahead of our annual Independence Day.

If you have never had to call a pest control agency, you may not be entirely familiar with the many helpful services they can provide. Pest Control in Rochester is an important topic that everyone should have some basic familiarity with. This is because an infestation of pests can actually affect anyone. No matter how clean you keep your home or how well-maintained your property is, it is entirely possible to end up with ants, rats, mice, fleas, flies, and wasps invading your space and causing all kinds of damage. No one wants this to happen to them, so you probably already do quite a bit to prevent an infestation from taking place. However, if despite your best efforts at prevention, you still find your home becoming a home for pests as well, then you need to call a nearby pest control agency.

A business providing extermination services and Pest Control in Rochester can actually do many things for their clients. They can provide initial consultations to tell you if your home or commercial property has any potential trouble spots that you should keep a close eye on. These trouble spots may be located in the basement, in crawl spaces, in the attic, or under the eaves of the roof. These spaces often have tiny holes that are barely noticeable to the untrained eye, but a pest control agent can spot these correctly as an entry point for insects and small rodents. Once inside, these pests can build nests that grow to considerable size and it doesn't take long for this to happen.

If you ever notice an unusual number of insects hanging around your property, this might be an indication that there's a problem that needs taken care of as soon as possible. You don't want to let too much time go by because some pests can reproduce at an alarming rate. Mammals such as rats and mice give birth to litters in rapid succession, though a swarm of insects can multiply exponentially in just a few days. Before you know it, there is an army of ants devouring your food in the kitchen and a swarm of wasps coming after your children! Mosquitoes too are a serious insect threat. Any standing water is a potential mosquito breeding ground. Wading pools, birdbaths, buckets, rain barrels, and other common forms of standing water might quickly turn into a serious mosquito problem.

Pest Control in Rochester is an important consideration for anyone living or working in the area. Everyone has to do their part to manage the insect and rodent population, so if you notice a problem, simply call a pest control service. They'll be happy to solve this serious problem.

Positive Personality Traits: Will It Help You Succeed?

Positive personality traits are important because it will influence the way you act and react to business challenges. It will help you how to run your business and attract more customers.

Internet business success is not rewarded for just showing up. It needs more than technicalities. I am amazed at some owners who could let personality shine through their work, which made them great. If you want to stand out from thousands of internet marketers trying to succeed online, you have to possess the following positive personality traits:

Sense of Entitlement

It is unrealistic to expect to succeed in your internet business without sacrifice and commitment. If you can count on anything, it is the fact that your efforts will not always give the results you expect. You must invest of yourself to achieve the desired effort. You must be observant, and patient enough to make the necessary adjustments.

Fear of Taking Chances

Fear is good but don?t allow it to keep you from taking chances, or you will be left behind. The very nature of internet business is change and chance so decisions will have to be made, and chances have to be taken.

Patient

It will help you succeed if you are patient. Don?t be consumed with the opportunity to earn a quick buck. Be tolerant. It takes time to get the hang of learning new ethical principles of internet business strategy.

Analytical

If you have an analytical mind and are able to think fast, you can capitalize on opportunities.

Selfless

Don?t get involved with internet business because you were laid off, or hate your current job. This is the time to reach out and help others. If you focus your energy in helping your target market achieve solutions to their problems, the more you will get back.

Sensitive

You must have the positive personality traits to be aware of how your business should affect others. If you are susceptible to your market, they will understand you better, value your input and respect you. People will be comfortable to contact you with sensitive issues relating to their product and service.

Sense of Integrity

Our sense of integrity represents our ethics, values, and actions that manifest our character. Integrity is hard to find because most people are only after making a quick sale or two. Many businesses exist to feed the hype and lie to take your money and run. Getting rich quick is all about short-term success goals. It takes legitimate business, hard work, determination and integrity to succeed.

Genuine

Internet businesses take more emphasis on being superficial and living up to the hype. Marketers gloat and flaunt about the millions of dollars they?ve earned. They forgot that real people also want to do business with genuine people. If you?re authentic in your business, you will have the ability to be unique. Let your personality flow through your business. It takes a lot of strength to tell your audience about the mistakes and lessons you have learned.

Our positive personality traits make up who we are and nobody can clone it. Working online should be a learning experience. Persistence and the ability to correct our action is the most positive personality traits. Nothing in the world can take its place, not even talent or genius.

Rep: Charlie Sheen did not trash his hotel room!

Gus Ruelas / REUTERS

?

By Us Weekly

Charlie Sheen may have thrown another wild party in an NYC hotel over the weekend -- but the hotel says they'd be happy to have him back.

PHOTOS: Charlie's epic 2011

The 46-year-old "Anger Management" star joined his ex-wife Denise Richards, 41, and their daughters Sam, 8 and Lola, 3, to NYC for a long weekend while Richards promoted her new film "Madea's Witness Protection." A source told Us Weekly the actor bailed on his family for most of the weekend and engaged in a party at his hotel room at the Ritz-Carlton with female escorts.

"He totally trashed the hotel room!" reveals the source, adding that Sheen intentionally moved his hotel room to be out of sight and earshot from Richards and their daughters. "Escorts were seen coming and leaving," the source said. "In the end, Charlie was told that he wasn't welcome at another Ritz property ever again."

PHOTOS: Charlie's wildest moments

However, Sheen's rep Larry Solters tells Us in a statement, "Charlie did not trash his hotel room. He checked in to room 2207 on Friday and checked out of room 2207 today. Charlie was not told that he is no longer welcome at the Ritz Carlton."

And Allison Sitch, VP of Global Public Relations at the hotel also tells Us that Sheen will be welcome back. "We do not disclose details or identity of any guest staying in our hotels. I confirm that the hotel was in pristine condition on Friday, June 22 and remains so today Tuesday, June 26," Sitch said in the statement. "There has been no issue there. Mr. Sheen is absolutely welcome in any Ritz- Carlton hotel in the portfolio."

PHOTOS: Denise's life as a single mom

In fall 2010, Sheen was hospitalized after hotel security at the Plaza Hotel in NYC called 911 when the actor was found drunk and intoxicated in his trashed hotel suite. One of the prostitutes who was partying with Sheen claimed she locked herself in the closet, fearing for her life. She said the actor was acting irrationally and throwing furniture, which reportedly totaled over $7,000 in damages. Sheen's rep Stan Rosenfield claimed at that time that he had "an adverse allergic reaction to some medication."

During that incident, Sheen was also visiting New York with Richards and she and their daughters were sleeping directly across the hall in the Eloise Suite. A source told Us Tuesday, "Denise is kicking herself for not learning her lesson."

Data Recovery Tips | Computers and Technology

The worst thing about any emergency is that it messes up our daily routine and throws us into a state of confusion and we really can never rule out emergencies from our lives, life is full of surprises; some good, some bad. What makes the difference is how readily prepared we are for such eventualities.

One of the most fatal emergencies most people are never really ready to accept is a problem with personal or business computers, as this most often results in vital data loss, and a data recovery system is probably the last thing on anyone?s mind when they buy a computer. Most of us never think something will go wrong until it?s too late. Data recovery or Disc Recovery services are things we hope we will ever have the need for.

There are several situations that can cause problems with your computer. Your computer could be running slowly or be loaded with powerful spyware that can destroy files, transmit personal data or, even worse, cause the computer to crash. A power surge, an electric storm, fires, floods, mechanical failure, user error and many other things can happen without any advance warning and that could be all it takes to lose all the information you cherish in your computer.

Data loss can be devastating. It could instantly take a small or medium size business from ?Open for Business? to ?Out of Business? in an instant. On a personal level, it can wipe away weeks, months and even years of critical data where there is no means of accessing or recreating this valuable information. Besides the situation of a complete computer crash, you could also accidentally delete important software or programs. Whether your computer completely crashes or you accidentally deleted software that is important or imperative to you, it may seem that your information is lost for good. If you have quality data recovery systems in place on your computer, you should feel confident in the fact that there is a backup. Whether you own your own business or work for someone or you just use your computer for keeping vital personal information, you?ll find that data protection is one of the smartest and safest approaches

you can take to ensure the profitability and livelihood of your business. When dealing with data recovery and protection it is vital you remain calm and assess whether you are dealing with a hard drive or other issue. Fortunately no matter how dire the situation you can usually follow some easy steps to ensure maximum data recovery in the event of a computer crash. Here are some tips to follow to prevent a complete disaster from occurring.

First, always back up your data routinely. This is virtually the most important step in data recovery. If you can get an automatic program to do it for you, the better. You could also ensure you have ?Backups of your Backups.? It is good to always keep a current backup offsite for absolute worst case scenarios.

Anytime you hear strange noises from your computer, such as a clunking noise when you power up your computer, immediately turn your computer off.

If you have to leave your home for a long period of time, say, going on vacation, always make backups of critical data, verify that all electronics are plugged into UPS (as they should be) power down and unplug from A.C. if possible. (Including telephone and modem lines.). You never can foretell a sudden power surge, electrical storm, fire or anything similar that could destroy your computer data. We never really expect things like this, but you won?t be forewarned, especially when you are not at home to handle the emergency.

It?s not a good idea to attempt any form of data recovery on your own unless you are a specialist. Messing with the hard drive or other parameters of your computer can exacerbate any data losses you may have already experienced.

Here is the good news, never assume the worst. In most cases data is recoverable even under the worst conditions like if your computer was swallowed by a flood and fully saturated.

Finally, whatever happens with your computer and vital data, never give room for fear or panic. Think optimistically and get your computer to a repair technician as soon as possible, chances are your data will be salvageable and safe.

It?s not all about the tanning butlers or 12-course molecular gastronomy tasting menus or the flat-screen pool-cabana entertainment systems. And it certainly isn?t about watching your bank account wash out to sea.

Acquiring Fiscal Help for Re-Roofing Needs of Memphis Locals

You need a working roof structure, that's certain. If you constructed the house you stay in at this point and didn't simply buy it off the Memphis housing industry, then you have a pretty clear idea of the amount it can cost. Even so, there's a chance that you'll be taken aback at the sizeable price roof replacement holds--and this is a trouble you'd have to contend with eventually, as roofs don't last forever.

The cost of roof replacement varies according to the sort of material to be employed, the layout of the home, and whether you will tear off the old roof covering or build over it. In Memphis, roof installation can cost anywhere from $8,000 to $20,000 if you're employing familiar products. That's a fortune, and not many individuals can spend for that straight up. However, like most big-ticket expenditures, you can get financial aid for your reroofing Requirements .

Get a quote

Before looking for any funding selections, you should know the amount of money you will need. You can communicate with trusted roofers here in Memphis to ask about the rates of re-roofing with your preferredd resources. Acquire an intricate estimate from a contractor, as this can assist you with your mortgage request.

Phone your bank

Your bank is probably among the best finance organizations you can rely on, although you can also discuss with other lending institution in your location. These loan companies offer two kinds of renovation loans: secured and unsecured. Secured loans demand an item for collateral, just like an asset or a piece of property, although unsecured loans don't.

Seek advice from local government

Some local engineering offices or government units offer home repair funds that can help pay off roofing contractors Memphis residents seek the services of. Nevertheless, these financing options are in most cases only available to senior citizens or individuals with disability. It wouldn't hurt to ask, so phone them at any rate.

Contact USDHUD

The US Department of Housing and Urban Development also provides renovation financing for US citizens to help with the costs of residential or commercial roofing Memphis residents need. Various finance classes are offered, like cheap remodeling loans, credit home improvement loans, or fast home improvement loans.

Several residential areas give local residents renovation grants. They're willing to pay a roofing contractor Memphis residents seek the services of to make the city bode well, as you have to have the cash to fix your roofing; it's a win-win circumstance. On the other hand, a few upgrading loans are designed for exclusive circumstances like rural families or war veterans. Drew Brees hopeful of long-term deal with Saints

NEW YORK (AP) ? New Orleans quarterback Drew Brees is confident that he and the Saints will agree on a long-term contract.

With the start of training camp about a month off, the two sides still have "a ways to go" to close the gap, the 2010 Super Bowl MVP said Tuesday.

Nonetheless, he said, "I'm confident, and always have been, that we'll get a long-term deal accomplished."

Brees acknowledged that the NFL's bounty investigation into the Saints has slowed down negotiations.

"This has been a stressful offseason in a lot of ways. There's been a lot of distractions for everybody," he said. "I'm not using that as an excuse other than just stating it as fact. That has delayed things quite a bit at times."

And when it comes to that bounty probe, Brees is adamant that the league has not proved money ever changed hands in a pay-to-injure scheme.

"How can everybody think that when there's been no proof that's been put forth thus far?" he said. "There's been an investigation; there's been a lot of stuff put in the media as to what was going on. But is there any proof to back that up? No, there's not. Not yet."

Brees was in New York on Tuesday to discuss a program that provides free concussion testing for more than 3,300 middle and high schools and youth sports organizations. He was joined on a panel by retired New York Rangers goalie Mike Richter, former New York Giants linebacker Carl Banks and ex-U.S. women's soccer team goalkeeper Briana Scurry.

Scurry's career was ended by a concussion more than two years ago, and she still suffers symptoms such as short-term memory loss, she said. Against that backdrop are the allegations that Saints defensive players intended to injure their opponents.

But Brees described the NFL's evidence so far as "hearsay" and "hypotheticals," not the definitive proof needed.

"If there is, then it needs to come forward," he said. "If it is what they say it is, then punishments will be levied and deservedly so. But if there's not, then we need to vindicate the guys that were obviously wrongly accused."

NFL spokesman Greg Aiello responded in an email to The Associated Press that "the evidence is overwhelming."

"The investigation was thorough and includes statements from multiple sources with firsthand knowledge about the details of the program, corroborating documentation and other evidence," Aiello said. "The enforcement of the bounty rule is important to protect players that are put at risk by this kind of scheme. Certainly, Drew Brees would not want to be the target in a bounty scheme and that is why we must eliminate bounties from football."

Even if Brees signs a contract in time and doesn't miss any of training camp, the Saints will be short-handed after the penalties handed out by the NFL in the bounty case. Coach Sean Payton and linebacker Jonathan Vilma have been suspended the entire season. Assistant coach Joe Vitt, the interim replacement for Payton, is banned for six games, while defensive end Will Smith is docked four. General manager Mickey Loomis will miss eight games.

Former Saints defensive lineman Anthony Hargrove, now with Green Bay, was suspended eight games and linebacker Scott Fujita, now with Cleveland, got three games.

"They had a conclusion that they wanted to reach that this was going on," Brees said of the NFL. "So a predetermined conclusion: We're going to gear the investigation and everything toward that conclusion as opposed to let's just gather the facts."

The league accused the Saints of running a bounty system from 2009-11 under former defensive coordinator Gregg Williams, who has been suspended indefinitely by Commissioner Roger Goodell and issued an apology for his role in the scandal.

Brees questioned the testimony coaches gave to the NFL.

"A lot those coaches were living in fear of their careers if they did not cooperate," he said.

The Saints placed their one-year franchise tag on Brees, barring him from negotiating with other teams. Brees has skipped voluntary practices and minicamp while holding out for a long-term deal.

"I feel like there's been progress made over the last few weeks," he said. "But there's still a ways to go. I'm hopeful that it will happen sooner than later."

Kris Humphries' Legal Team To Subpoena Kanye's Ex Amber Rose ...

WENN/Splash News

By Jen Heger - Radar Assistant Managing Editor

Kris Humphries is going to subpoena Kanye West's ex-girlfriend, Amber Rose, because she has previously claimed that the hip hop superstar and reality TV star hooked up several years ago and not recently as Kim has claimed; meanwhile, the NBA star's deposition is taking place right now in Minnesota, RadarOnline.com is exclusively reporting.

As we previously reported, Rose claimed earlier this year, before West and Kardashian went public with their romance, that Kim tried to steal Kanye from her. They were both cheating," Amber, 28, tells Star exclusively. "They were both cheating on me and Reggie with each other...Kim is one of the main reasons why me and Kanye are not together," Amber told Star Magazine via RadarOnline.com. "She's a homewrecker!"

PHOTOS: Kim Kardashian's Bikini Body Through The Years

Kris legal team "will absolutely be issuing a subpoena for Amber Rose to be deposed because she has very relevant information and could contradict Kim's timeline about when she and Kanye West became romantically involved. Kris' team hasn't spoken to Amber yet, but they are hopeful that she will be a cooperative witness. If Kris' lawyers determine she will be a hostile witness, they will still depose her because they just want to get to the truth," a source close to the situation tells us.

PHOTOS: Kim Kardashian's Style Evolution

Meanwhile, Humphries deposition is being conducted in Minnesota right now. "The deposition is expected to go all day, and Kim's lawyer, Laura Wasser, had to trek from Los Angeles to the midwest for the deposition, and it could last for at least two days.? Kim isn't at the deposition, although she could have chosen to be there. Kim's deposition will be taking place in the next ten days in Los Angeles, and Kris' lawyer, Lee Hutton, will go to California for it," an insider tells us.

Also being deposed in the bitter divorce battle will be Kim's ex-boyfriend, Reggie Bush and current love interest Kanye West.

After all depositions are completed, a date for the divorce trial will be set. Kim and Kris' depositions are being vieo taped.

A rep for Kris Humphries had no comment, and his lawyer didn't immediately respond to request for comment.

(AP) ? The first seafood caught off Japan's Fukushima coastline since last year's nuclear disaster went on sale Monday, but the offerings were limited to octopus and marine snails because of persisting fears about radiation.

Octopus and whelk, a kind of marine snail, were chosen for the initial shipments because testing for radioactive cesium consistently measured no detectable amounts, according to the Fukushima Prefectural (state) fishing cooperative. They were caught Friday and boiled so they last longer while being tested for radiation before they could be sold Monday.

Flounder, sea bass and other fish from Fukushima can't be sold yet because of contamination. It was unclear when they will be approved for sale as they measure above the limit in radiation set by the government. The government is testing for radioactive iodine as well, but its half-life is shorter than cesium and thus is less worrisome.

"It was crisp when I bit into it, and it tasted so good," said Yasuhiro Yoshida, who oversees the seafood section at York Benimaru supermarket in Soma, which sold out of about 30 kilograms (65 pounds) of the snails and 40 kilograms (90 pounds) of the octopus that had been shipped to the store.

The March 11 earthquake and tsunami last year left the coastlines of northeastern Japan devastated, and displaced tens of thousands of people. Entire towns were contaminated by the radiation leaking from Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear plant, where three reactors went into meltdowns.

"I was filled with both uncertainty and hope today, but I was so happy when I found out the local supermarket had sold out by 3 p.m.," said Hirofumi Konno, an official in charge of sales at the fishing cooperative in Soma city in coastal Fukushima.

He said he hoped crabs would be next to go on sale as radiation had not been detected in them, but he acknowledged things will take time, perhaps years, especially for other kinds of fish. Radiation amounts have been decreasing, but cesium lasts years.

The octopus and snail were selling at almost half of what they fetched before the disaster, he said. But he said people were buying Fukushima seafood to show support for local fishermen. The items were available locally but not in the whole prefecture or the Tokyo area.

Nobuyuki Yagi, a University of Tokyo professor studying the fisheries industry after the disaster, said serious concerns remain over whether anyone would buy Fukushima fish, and the key lay in finding the types of fish that don't store radioactive elements.

"Fishing cannot survive unless people buy the fish. That may seem obvious, but Fukushima is facing up to this," he said in a statement earlier this month.

Farmlands have also been contaminated, and every grain of rice will be tested at harvest in some areas before they can be sold. The image of Fukushima produce has been seriously tarnished, and worried consumers, especially those with children, are shunning Fukushima-grown food.

"We are in for the long haul," Konno said in a telephone interview.

University of Glasgow improves terahertz laser laboratory safety

APPLICATIONS NEWS

22 June 2012

The University of Glasgow has taken steps to improve safety for researchers in its terahertz infrared laser laboratory.

The terahertz region of the electromagnetic spectrum is one of the least explored but shows great potential for application in fields of science, security and medicine. Because the terahertz laser is a Class IV device,?university personnel wear safety goggles to protect their eyes but the infrared beam also has the potential to cause serious damage to clothing or skin. To ensure the terahertz infrared laser beam is on-target a variety of infrared lenses and mirrors are used. ?

Yong Ma, a research assistant at the University?s school of engineering microsystem technology group, said: ?I always scan the entire area [of the laboratory] with our Flir i7 thermal imaging camera to detect any beams that are projected in the wrong direction.?

Historically the laboratory used thermal paper to detect beam projection. This discolours when it becomes warm but it is a method that is far from being efficient. The Flir i7 is a top-of-the-range model in the Flir entry-level series of thermal imaging cameras.?The latest generation features a 140 x 140 pixel array, providing an increased image quality of 36 per cent?against its forerunner, and also a wider field of view. It is also much more robust and able to withstand a 2m drop test onto a hard surface without any detrimental effect.

ATHENS, Greece (AP) ? Greece's new prime minister and finance minister were both in hospitals Saturday, being treated for different ailments less than three days after a government was formed in the crisis-struck country.

The creation of a three-party coalition government following two inconclusive national elections ended weeks of political uncertainty that had led to fears of Greece being forced out of Europe's joint currency. Such an event could have dragged down other financially troubled European countries and dragged down the continent's economy.

Prime Minister Antonis Samaras, whose conservative New Democracy party came first in June 17 elections but did not win enough votes to form a government on its own, underwent eye surgery to repair the early stages of a detached retina.

The problem was discovered during what his office said was a routine eye test on Friday.

State NET radio said the surgery was completed successfully shortly after mid-day. The prime minister's office said a statement from the hospital on his condition was expected later in the day.

Although Samaras returned to his office Friday afternoon after his eye check, a meeting of his conservative party's newly elected deputies that had been planned for that night was canceled.

Separately, newly appointed Finance Minister Vassilis Rapanos, 65, remained in a private clinic after being rushed to hospital Friday suffering from intense abdominal pain, nausea, dizziness, sweating and weakness.

The hospital said Saturday that he had been submitted to tests, the results of which were "very satisfactory," and that his condition was "stable and improving".

It did not say what he was suffering from or give any further details on his condition, other than to say his treatment would continue "for the next hours." It was unclear how long he would remain hospitalized.

Rapanos, who was named to the post Thursday, has not been sworn in to office yet. His swearing in ceremony had been scheduled for Friday evening, but was postponed due to his illness.

Samaras was sworn in as Greece's fourth prime minister in eight months Wednesday, after three days of negotiations which led to New Democracy forming a power-sharing government with long-time socialist PASOK party rivals, and the small Democratic Left party.

The government has pledged to keep Greece within Europe's joint currency and broadly stick to the terms of its international bailout from other European countries and the International Monetary Fund. But it has said it will seek to renegotiate some of the conditions of its rescue loans.

Greece has been dependent on billions of euros (dollars) of rescue loans since May 2010, after it became locked out of the international borrowing market by sky-high interest rates following years of profligate spending and poor fiscal management.

In return, it imposed harsh austerity measures, including slashing spending on everything from healthcare to education, cutting salaries and pensions and repeatedly raising taxes.

But it has still struggled to meet its fiscal targets, and the measures have plunged the country into a deep recession, now in its fifth year, and have sent unemployment soaring to above 22 percent.

Samaras faces his first test to his pledges to renegotiate some of the bailout terms next week, when he is due to go to Brussels for a European Union summit on June 28-29.
