(AP) ? Personnel records of former and current members of Nigeria's top domestic spy agency, including home addresses and names of immediate family members, leaked onto the Internet in a threatening message that claimed to come from a radical Islamist sect that's killed hundreds of people this year alone, The Associated Press has learned.

The leak of personal data of more than 60 past and current employees of Nigeria's State Security Service remained easily accessible on the Internet for days and had details about the agency's director-general, including his mobile phone number, bank account particulars and contact information for his son. Many of agents listed who could be reached by the AP said they received no official warning from the spy agency that their information had been posted online nor been otherwise alerted. The material has been deleted from the comment section of a website, but the security breach astonished veterans and calls into question whether Nigeria's intelligence community, whose agents already have released suspected terrorists out of religious and ethnic sympathies, are too compromised from within to stop the violence now plaguing Africa's most populous nation.

"This is a national embarrassment," said one Nigerian intelligence official, who spoke on condition of anonymity as information about the leak was not to have been made public.

Marilyn Ogar, a spokeswoman for the State Security Service, did not immediately respond to requests for comment Thursday about the leak.

The State Security Service, created in 1986 by then-military ruler Gen. Ibrahim Babangida, monitors domestic dissent in Nigeria, an oil-rich nation of more than 160 million people. Though geared toward stopping terrorism and destabilizing coups, the agency routinely faces criticism for targeting government critics. In Abuja, Nigeria's capital, the agency operates out of cars made to look like the many green taxis that roam the streets. Plain-clothed agents of the service routinely question foreign journalists at airports, border crossings and on city streets if they see reporters conducting interviews. Agents carrying assault rifles often guard major events in the country.

Many agents for the typically secretive agency are preoccupied with concealing their identities, as most try to blend unnoticed into society.

The information leak came in two postings earlier this month on a website that provides rewritten news on Nigeria. The first posting threatened to kill agents of the State Security Service on behalf of Boko Haram, a radical Islamist sect responsible for more than 660 killings this year alone in Nigeria. The second posting simply offered a block of text containing biographical and other details about the agents.

Though the comments have been removed, the AP is not identifying the website involved as cached versions of the comments remain online and intelligence service agents have been killed by Boko Haram members in the past.

The list includes former and current agents across the country, including Director-General Ekpeyong Ita. Those reached by the AP who were willing to talk expressed disbelief that sensitive information like that could make its way to the Internet.

"I was shocked to see my details posted on the Internet," said one former agent, who declined to be named out of safety concerns. "I've not heard anything from anybody. I was surprised that such information could be leaked."

Another man on the list said he simply once served as a doctor to help the agency on an on-call basis only. The list appeared to include lower-ranking agents, as well as one-time state directors for the agency.

Some of those contacted suggested that the list appeared to come from the agency's pension department, as it mostly included retirees and listed bank account information for nearly all those named.

The release of the information comes as Nigeria's intelligence agencies have made a series of blunders in trying to fight Boko Haram in Africa's most populous country, with some likely influenced by ethnic or religious sentiments. Intelligence agencies allegedly released a suspected Islamic radical in 2007 who later masterminded Boko Haram's suicide car bombing of the U.N. headquarters in August 2011 that killed at least 25 people and wounded more than 100 others, officials previously told the AP. A leaked U.S. diplomatic cable also show U.S. officials complained in 2008 about Nigeria's government quietly releasing other suspects into the custody of Islamic leaders as part of a program it called "Perception Management."

Another U.S. diplomatic cable complains that State Security Service agents nearly let a suspected bomb maker trained by the Somali terror group al-Shabab onto an international flight, despite an Interpol notice for his arrest. The agents who allegedly tried to release Mohamed Ibrahim Ahmed "not only knew about the Interpol notice, but simply said they did not want to hold him any longer," the February 2010 cable read.

Ahmed, an Eritrean, pleaded guilty to charges in June in a U.S. federal court that he supported terrorism by associating with al-Shabab, a terror group with links to al-Qaida. He faces up to 10 years in prison.

Most of those on the leaked list of agents reached by the AP said no one from the federal government or the spy agency warned them that their personnel information had appeared on the Internet. Instead, colleagues and other former agents called each other to spread the news and later contacted the State Security Service themselves to report the breach.

It is unclear if the person who posted the information online really does have ties to Boko Haram, which has targeted security officials in the past. Violence has been centered mostly in the country's Muslim north. One retired agent who spoke to AP said he was grateful he lives in the largely Christian south, away from the sect's attacks.

"It's worrying that they have access to that," the agent said. "Those living in Abuja (and the north) are the ones who should living in fear."

Private versus public health insurance | InsuranceQuotes.com

Lori Johnston

Federal health care reform is billed as a way to guarantee you, your family, your neighbors, your co-workers and all Americans have a choice of affordable health insurance.

By requiring insurers to offer coverage to more people and growing government programs, the federal health care reform law seeks to expand health care coverage for Americans ? nearly 50 million of whom are uninsured. By 2014, most Americans will be required to buy health insurance or must pay a tax penalty for not doing so.

Most Americans don?t have a multitude of choices right now, especially between a selection of affordable private health plans and government-funded health coverage.

?Most people don?t have that choice. We think you ought to have more options,? says Michael Freeman, executive vice president of the Healthcare Leadership Council, a coalition of chief executives of the nation?s leading health care companies and organizations.

If you?re a senior adult still in the workforce, you do have a choice between private health insurance ? through an employer ? and government-backed Medicare. Within Medicare, private options are available.

public-private-health-insurance

The other main government insurance program, Medicaid, assists the country?s poorest people. These people, even if they are employed, aren?t likely to be able to afford insurance offered through their employers. One component of health care reform will make Medicaid available to more low-income families, those earning up to 1.33 times the poverty level.

But if given a choice between private health insurance and government health insurance, which should people pick? Researchers and health policy officials drew on their knowledge and studies about Medicare ? the government?s most popular program ? and private insurance in offering their opinions.

Michael Freeman
Executive vice president
Healthcare Leadership Council, a coalition of chief executives of health care companies and organizations

Why private insurance: ?Private insurance in general is the preferable option in that private companies adjust more to changes in medicine and can adapt more quickly to new medical innovations. Private plans are looking for ways to provide better care at less cost. It took 40 years (for Medicare) to cover prescription drugs. If you look at the history of Medicare and Medicaid, it?s like a big ocean liner trying to turn around. With a private plan, you don?t need an act of Congress to change what you?re going to cover.?

Outlook: ?Looking forward into the future, as Medicare and Medicaid continue to have lower payment rates than private insurance, it becomes a real question whether a sufficient number of doctors are taking Medicare and Medicaid patients. You have access problems.?

Robert Zirkelbach
Spokesman for America?s Health Insurance Plans, a trade association for the health insurance industry

Why private insurance: ?If you look at the Medicare program, every senior does have the choice between the private Medicare Advantage plan and the fee-for-service part of Medicare (where health care providers are paid for each office visit, test, procedure or other service). Seniors are increasingly choosing to enroll in the private plan. It has grown steadily: One in four seniors are enrolled because of the benefits and service and higher quality those plans provide. Private Medicare Advantage plans are ? helping coordinate care for beneficiaries with chronic medical conditions. They are enrolled in disease management programs.?

Outlook: ?Evidence shows those programs work to improve care for patients and lower health care costs. Our research has done a tremendous amount of work looking at hospital readmissions. We have a readmission crisis in this country. Patients who are discharged from the hospital are not getting appropriate follow-up. In a fee-for-service system, there isn?t an incentive for hospitals and doctors to take steps to prevent that from happening. If patient goes back to the hospital, they get paid again. What private plans have done is they?ve implemented programs ? to make sure patients get appropriate follow-up care to avoid unnecessary, costly trips to ER. Readmission rates in the Medicare Advantage program are 20 to 30 percent lower than the Medicaid fee-for-service program.?

Kristof Stremikis
Senior researcher at The Commonwealth Fund, a private foundation that conducts research on health care issues

Why government insurance: ?Medicare is doing a good job on the two main purposes of health insurance: access to care and financial protection from medical bills when they do get care. Medicare beneficiaries are reporting better access to care, better financial protection, fewer negative experiences and overall they?re more satisfied with their insurance (according to 2012 research by The Commonwealth Fund). It appears Medicare is doing a better job. Those folks who do have Medicare, relative to working adults who have private coverage, are reporting fewer negative experiences, less billing problems, and are less likely to accrue medical debt and have whole host of financial problems because of medical care. They?re more satisfied overall with health insurance.

?Generally, employer-sponsored coverage isn?t rated as highly as Medicare coverage. When you think about it, why would people be less satisfied with it? Costs (for employer coverage) are going up and up and up. Costs are going up for Medicare, too, but it?s been particularly tough on those with employer coverage.?

Outlook: ?A number of things (related to health care reform) are trying to change the system and make it more efficient. There are some new ways to pay doctors. In the Medicare program, the health reform bill is gradually closing the donut hole (a gap in Medicare coverage for prescriptions). Lots of beneficiaries have access to free preventive visits.?

Dr. Benjamin Sommers
Assistant professor of health policy and economics, Harvard School of Public Health

Why government insurance: ?When states (he studied Arizona, Maine and New York) expanded Medicaid to all low-income adults ? that broader expansion reduced mortality. It improved health and saved lives (an estimated 6 percent decline in the adult death rate). We also looked at other measures and found people had better access to care. They were less likely to put off getting care. They were more likely to stay in very good or excellent health. There are a lot of people out there who suggest that any kind of health care involving the government must be bad. I think that?s very misleading. The vast majority of people with Medicare are positive about it.?

Outlook: ?A part of what our findings are suggesting is that in some ways these government programs are very effective for health and health insurance. (The study) looked at how often they had to put off seeing doctor because they couldn?t afford it. After states expanded Medicaid (using guidelines from the new health care law), fewer people had to put off care. Particularly for low-income adults, they had a much easier time getting care they needed. Reducing those cost barriers (kept them from) waiting until they have an emergency.?

PFT: Edwards praises Wilson,?rips Sanchez

NBC-Sports-Network-1-e1312231418815-1

Next week, the 2012 NFL regular season launches.? As a very, very, very (did I say very?) small footnote to that, the PFT weed will be spreading into new territory.

We?re taking the website to NBC Sports Network, with a one-hour show every weekday, at 5:00 p.m. ET.

The show, curiously dubbed Pro Football Talk, debuts on Tuesday, September 4.? Hosted by the highly competent and funny and engaging Erik Kuselias and by an Internet hack who is the exact opposite of those three traits, the show will bring the PFT temperament and attitude to the small screen, with help from NBC talent like Rodney Harrison, Hines Ward, Doug Flutie, Ross Tucker, Amani Toomer, and Peter King.

The powers-that-be tell me they?re sending out an official press release soon.? They wanted me to say something for it.? Here?s the best I could muster:? ?When we started the website, the goal was to create a place I?d want to visit as a football fan.? That same objective applies to Pro Football Talk. ?We wanted to make a show that I would spend time watching if I wasn?t involved in it.? Of course, some may say they?d be more likely to watch this show if I actually wasn?t involved in it.?

The content here won?t suffer a bit.? We?ll be tweaking the format of PFT Live so that it will be a shorter show, with less prep time, which gives me more time at the keyboard.? And we?ve put together an excellent stable of writers, from MDS to Darin Gantt to Josh Alper to Evan Silva.

Like the website, Pro Football Talk will be a creature of the moment, with the latest news you need to know, outside-the-box analysis, genuine debate, and some humor.? Not forced or phony laughs, but genuinely funny moments (hopefully) that will make you feel like you?re hanging out with a group of friends.? (Or at a minimum casual acquaintances whom you don?t hate.)

The party starts next Tuesday at 5:00 p.m. ET.? On Wednesday, I?ll be at MetLife Stadium for the show, as we get ready for the regular-season opener between the Cowboys and the Giants.

We?ll be seeking your questions and your input and your feedback; this show is for you not for us and we want to be sure we cover the subjects that you want us to cover ? and that we avoid low-hanging fruit and five-letter quarterback/punt protector/special-teams aces.

Obama does first presidential 'ask me anything' chat on Reddit

Barack Obama / Reddit

President Barack Obama is seen at the keyboard in a photo submitted to Reddit as part of the website's "ask me anything" live chat verification process.

By Alan Boyle and Rosa Golijan

President Obama and his staff are quite savvy when it comes to technology ? and social sites, in particular???so it shouldn't have come as a surprise that they turned to the social sharing site Reddit today. But it did. With little advance notice, Obama held an "Ask Me Anything" (AMA) live chat, taking questions directly from the Reddit community.

Obama said the most difficult decision he made during his presidency was to boost U.S. military forces for a "surge" in Afghanistan. He said it might take a constitutional amendment to reform the country's campaign financing system. He laid out his plan for helping small businesses and debt-laden graduates, gave a shout-out to Internet freedom and basketball great Michael Jordan, and voiced support for the idea of sending astronauts to Mars someday. But perhaps the biggest news from the AMA was that Obama was actually doing an AMA.

"I am Barack Obama, President of the United States ? AMA," he posted on Reddit, adopting the site's terminology. Several Reddit moderators and Admins quickly chimed in to confirm that they verified Obama's identity and that the post wasn't some sort of prank. Reddit's general manager, Erik Martin, told us that the site's staff was in contact with Obama's staff. Obama additionally posted a link to a tweet from his official Twitter account, pointing to that Reddit thread, along with a photo showing the president sitting at a laptop.

Twitter

A Reddit AMA is basically a question-and-answer free-for-all ? a staple of the Internet forum. Astronomer Neil DeGrasse Tyson, an AMA alum, famously described Reddit as a "raging community of people with boundless curiosity." From its humble beginnings, in which ordinary joes took questions about their extraordinary experiences, the Reddit AMA has grown into a global stage for scholars, authors and celebrities.

Obama's first-ever presidential AMA added even more wattage to Reddit's spotlight.

"Hey everybody ??this is Barack," the president wrote at the start of his AMA. "Just finished a great rally in Charlottesville, and am looking forward to your questions. At the top, I do want to say that our thoughts and prayers are with folks who are dealing with Hurricane Isaac in the Gulf, and to let them know that we are going to be coordinating with state and local officials to make sure that we give families everything they need to recover."

Obama was due to answer questions on Reddit for about half an hour. More than 11,000 comments piled up by the time Obama bowed out of the conversation, almost an hour after it began. Traffic levels were so high that some folks who wanted to get in on the AMA were stymied by the server overload.?During the AMA, the two top trends on Twitter were "RNC" (for the Republican National Convention) ... and "Reddit."

We checked in with Reddit's Martin while the AMA was in progress. When we asked how things were going, he blurted out that "it's a bit crazy over here!" Frantic typing could be heard in the background.

After the AMA, Reddit's status account on Twitter reported that the site was "cleaning up after the president's visit. ... We'll be back ASAP."

Here's a rundown of the topics Obama covered. Some of the questions have been condensed or paraphrased:

Are you considering increasing funds to the space program? "Making sure we stay at the forefront of space exploration is a big priority for my administration. The passing of Neil Armstrong this week is a reminder of the inspiration and wonder that our space program has provided in the past; the Curiosity probe on Mars is a reminder of what remains to be discovered. The key is to make sure that we invest in cutting-edge research that can take us to the next level ??so even as we continue work with the International Space Station, we are focused on a potential mission to an asteroid as a prelude to a manned Mars flight."

Is Internet freedom an issue you'd push to add to the Democratic Party's 2012 platform??"Internet freedom is something I know you all care passionately about; I do too. We will fight hard to make sure that the Internet remains the open forum for everybody ??from those who are expressing an idea to those to want to start a business. And although their will be occasional disagreements on the details of various legislative proposals, I won't stray from that principle ??and it will be reflected in the platform."

Favorite basketball player? "[Michael] Jordan ??I'm a Bulls guy."

How are you going help small businesses in 2013 and 2014? And what if any bills are you going to implement for small businesses, in 2013, and 2014? "We've really focused on this since I came into office ? 18 tax cuts for small business, easier funding from the SBA [Small Business Administration]. Going forward, I want to keep taxes low for the 98 percent of small businesses that have $250,000 or less in income, make it easier for small business to access financing, and expand their opportunities to export. And we will be implementing the Jobs Act bill that I signed that will make it easier for startups to access crowd-funding and reduce their tax burden at the start-up stage."

What is the first thing you'll do on Nov. 7, win or lose??"Win or lose, I'll be thanking everybody who is working so hard ? especially all the volunteers in field offices all across the country, and the amazing young people in our campaign offices."

What was the most difficult decision that you had to make during this term? "The decision to surge our forces in Afghanistan. Anytime you send our brave men and women into battle, you know that not everyone will come home safely, and that necessarily weighs heavily on you. The decision did help us blunt the Taliban's momentum, and is allowing us to transition to Afghan lead ??so we will have recovered that surge at the end of this month, and will end the war at the end of 2014. But knowing of the heroes that have fallen is something you never forget."

What are you going to do to end the corrupting influence of money in politics during your second term??"Money has always been a factor in politics, but we are seeing something new in the no-holds-barred flow of seven- and eight-figure checks, most undisclosed, into super-PACs; they fundamentally threaten to overwhelm the political process over the long run and drown out the voices of ordinary citizens. We need to start with passing the Disclose Act that is already written and [has] been sponsored in Congress ? to at least force disclosure of who is giving to who. We should also pass legislation prohibiting the bundling of campaign contributions from lobbyists. Over the longer term, I think we need to seriously consider mobilizing a constitutional amendment process to overturn Citizens United (assuming the Supreme Court doesn't revisit it). Even if the amendment process falls short, it can shine a spotlight of the super-PAC phenomenon and help apply pressure for change."

What's the recipe for the White House's beer? "It will be out soon! I can tell from firsthand experience, it is tasty."

I am a recent law school graduate [and now] find myself unemployed with a large student loan debt burden. While I'm sure my immediate prospects will improve in time, it's difficult to be optimistic about the future.?... Many of us are demoralized. Your 2008 campaign was successful in large part due to the efforts of younger demographics. We worked for you, we campaigned for you, and we turned out in record numbers to vote for you. ... What hope can you offer us for your second term??"I understand how tough it is out there for recent grads. You're right ? your long-term prospects are great, but that doesn't help in the short term. Obviously some of the steps we have taken already help young people at the start of their careers. Because of the health care bill, you can stay on your parent's plan until you're 26. Because of our student loan bill, we are lowering the debt burdens that young people have to carry. But the key for your future, and all our futures, is an economy that is growing and creating solid middle-class jobs ? and that's why the choice in this election is so important. The other party has two ideas for growth ? more tax cuts for the wealthy (paid for by raising tax burdens on the middle class and gutting investments like education) and getting rid of regulations we've put in place to control the excesses on Wall Street and help consumers. These ideas have been tried, they didn't work, and will make the economy worse. I want to keep promoting advanced manufacturing that will bring jobs back to America, promote all-American energy sources (including wind and solar), keep investing in education and make college more affordable, rebuild our infrastructure, invest in science, and reduce our deficit in a balanced way with prudent spending cuts and higher taxes on folks making more than $250,000 a year. I don't promise that this will solve all our immediate economic challenges, but my plans will lay the foundation for long-term growth for your generation, and for generations to follow. So don't be discouraged ??we didn't get into this fix overnight, and we won't get out overnight, but we are making progress and with your help will make more."

How do you balance family life and hobbies with, well, being the president of the United States??"It's hard ? truthfully, the main thing other than work is just making sure that I'm spending enough time with Michelle and the girls. The big advantage I have is that I live above the store ? so I have no commute! So we make sure that when I'm in DC I never miss dinner with them at 6:30 p.m. ??even if I have to go back down to the Oval for work later in the evening. I do work out every morning as well, and try to get a basketball or golf game in on the weekends just to get out of the bubble. Opposition says Putin's lifestyle costs billions

MOSCOW (AP) ? Russian President Vladimir Putin is spending billions of taxpayers' rubles on 20 luxurious residences, 43 jets and four yachts, a top opposition leader claimed Tuesday.

All heads of state use government property and funds for presentation purposes, but Boris Nemtsov says Putin's lifestyle is far more lavish than his Western counterparts.

In the report released Tuesday, Nemtsov, a former deputy prime minister, estimated that the maintenance of Putin's residences, jets and cars alone costs $2.5 billion a year.

"Putin has been mistaking government property for his own for a long time," Nemtsov said. "This is an insolent, cynical and luxurious lifestyle at taxpayers' expense."

Putin's press service was not immediately available for comment Tuesday but his spokesman had earlier words on the report.

"All of this is government property and Putin uses it all legally as an elected president," Putin's spokesman Dmitry Peskov told the RBK daily on Monday after parts of the report had appeared online.

The report ? titled "The Life of A Galley Slave" after an epithet Putin used in 2008 to describe the hardships of his first two presidencies ? is based largely on news reports. It includes numerous photographs, including of Putin's collection of exquisite wristwatches worth about $700,000 ? about his official salary for six years,

Putin returned to the Kremlin in May for a third term after four years sitting out as prime minister due to constitutional limits.

Opposition members and a handful of Russia's independent publications have long claimed that Putin had more than a dozen luxurious residencies built or renovated for him throughout Russia ? from an imperial palace in his native St. Petersburg to resorts on the Black Sea to hunting grounds in national parks.

They also accused him of appointing his childhood friends, former classmates and KGB colleagues to key government jobs or allowing their businesses to thrive on oil and gas exports or hefty government contracts.

Nemtsov said his report will be distributed free of charge or online because he could not find a Russian publisher.

Despite a wave of massive protests this winter that followed Russia's fraud-tainted parliamentary and presidential votes, Putin remains popular among average Russians, largely thanks to government-controlled television networks that critics compare to Soviet propaganda.

Nemtsov, who heads the People's Freedom Party, has already authored another report on the unprecedented rise of corruption among government officials since Putin was first elected in 2000.

Graft also has become more institutionalized under Putin. Bosses tend not to punish their employees for taking bribes, but rather demand a share. Observers say the Kremlin has tolerated the wrongdoing because it's the main source of income for millions of bureaucrats whose support is crucial to Putin.

Reflecting that, Transparency International's corruption perception index has ranked Russia 143rd out of 183 countries.

The Hardest Part of Buy-and-Hold Real Estate Investing

delayed gratification real estate

Let me start this post by saying I love ?buy-and-hold? real estate investing.? I just wish it was easier.

Flipping real estate or wholesaling deals is appealing, as cash is quick and you know in a short time frame if you have made a good deal.? Unfortunately, buy-and-hold real estate can take a long time to generate a meaningful amount of cash flow.

This leads me to today?s topic, as I want to highlight what I believe to be the hardest part of buy-and-hold real estate investing. If I asked 100 people what they thought the hardest part of buy-and-hold real estate investing was, these are the answers I would expect:

  • Finding a deal
  • Securing the down payment
  • Finding a good tenant
  • Managing tenants
  • Handling evictions

In my opinion, all of these answers would be incorrect.I strongly believe the biggest issue with successful buy-and-hold real estate investing is:

Lets explore an example that walks through some hypothetical numbers. Buy-and-hold real estate starts with the purchase of the first property that may produce $100-$400 positive cash flow in most months.? While this is a great start, it will not take you to the finish line.

Therefore, you start plowing all of your extra cash flow, bonuses from work, and any extra cash you can generate into the second property.? Now you have $200-$800 in cash flow most months, depending on the properties you purchased.

Why only most months?? Stuff breaks unexpectedly, tenants leave without paying, and you may have an eviction to handle. Please realize right now that even the best cash flow estimate is just that? an estimate? so budget for surprises.

Now, back to the topic and hand: ?Delayed Gratification?

Buy-and-hold real estate investing is hard because it frankly takes so long for to produce a meaningful pile of monthly proceeds. I have been doing this for 10+ years now, and I managed to ride one buy-and-hold real estate cycle almost perfectly, meaning I sold the houses at the peak and moved the equity into apartment buildings (delayed gratification again).

I took maximum advantage of this down cycle by buying 20+ properties before the Wall Street money woke up and changed the market overnight.

You see, it is ONLY after all this time (since 2001), nearly perfect timing on repositioning equity during a significant turn in the market (2006-2007) and taking maximum advantage of a once-in-a-lifetime buying opportunities (2008-2010) I can finally see the end in sight.

Ask yourself these questions:
Could you delay gratification for 10+ years? Could you plow every single dollar back into real estate? Could you take the negative surprises and keep moving forward?? Would your partner be willing to sacrifice this long, or would they want to stop half-way and buy a bigger house?

What about the mistakes? No one goes through 10 years of real estate investing without making mistakes. Would you acknowledge them and move on? Would your partner hold them against you? Would you be turned off on real estate investing forever, only to be brought back in after the market turns and adds 20% to current prices?

Buy-and-hold real estate investing has worked for generations, and it will work for generations to come. Unfortunately, most people and couples are not wired to delay gratification for one week, let alone 1 year, 5 years or 10 years!? If you are, congratulations, but without your partner on board, you have no shot, as they will spend it as soon as the extra money comes in.

I want to thank my wife for sticking with this 10 year run.? It was never easy, never boring, but boy was it worth it.

Good Investing

Colombia government seeks peace with FARC rebels

Fernando Vergara / AP

During a televised speech on Monday, Colombia's President Juan Manuel Santos says that his government had held exploratory talks with rebels of the the leftist Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia.

By NBC News staff and wire reports

BOGOTA, Colombia -- Colombia's government is seeking peace with the country's biggest rebel group, the FARC, and could consider also holding talks with a second guerrilla movement to end five decades of war, the country's president said on Monday.?

"(W)e have had exploratory conversations with the FARC to seek an end to the conflict,"?President Juan Manuel Santos?said in a televised address from the presidential palace, confirming weeks of swirling rumors that his government had started behind-the-scenes discussions.

A successful peace agreement with the rebels would secure Santos a place in history as the leader who ended a conflict that has killed tens of thousands over the years and left the Andean nation's reputation in tatters.?

Santos also said his government would learn from the mistakes of so many previous leaders who tried but failed to clinch a lasting cease-fire with the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia.?

He said that the military would continue its operations "throughout every centimeter" of Colombia while talks continued.?Santos did not provide further details, but said he would reveal more about the talks in the coming days.?

The president has said he would consider peace talks with the FARC only if he was certain the drug-funded group would negotiate in good faith.?The last peace effort ended in shambles.?

Colombia 'milestone' as FARC frees captives after over a decade

In response to a Reuters interview published on Monday with the head of the nation's second biggest rebel group, Santos said the National Liberation Army, known as the ELN, could also be involved in the peace talks.?

"Today the ELN has expressed, via an international news agency, its interest in participating in conversations to put an end to the violence," the president said in his brief speech.?

"I tell that group that, within the same framework, they too can be part of the effort to end the conflict."?

'People's army'?
The FARC, which calls itself "the people's army" defending peasant rights, has battled about a dozen governments since appearing in 1964, when its founder, Manuel Marulanda, and 48 rebels fought off thousands of troops in jungle hide-outs.?

The group has faced its biggest setbacks in recent years as U.S.-trained special forces use sophisticated technology and spy networks to track the leaders.?

Jaime Saldarriaga / Reuters, file

A member of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) runs during a battle with the Colombian army in the mountains of Jambalo, in the province of Cauca, on July 12. Cauca province -- known colloquially to soldiers as Cauca-kistan for the intensity of combat there -- has been one of the hottest regions of the conflict and it is a strategic area for the production and transport of cocaine.

A string of defeats began in 2008 with a cross-border military raid into Ecuador that killed its second in command. Marulanda died of a heart attack weeks later and was replaced by Alfonso Cano, who was later killed too.?

But there has been a recent uptick in violence. Attacks on oil industry installations have jumped 40 percent over the last year, while violent clashes between troops and indigenous protesters led to withering criticism of Santos for not protecting the soldiers.?

Six people were killed, including two children, in a FARC bomb attack in central Meta province on Sunday.

Political future for rebels?
Details of the talks are still being worked out, the source said, but the negotiations could take place in Cuba or Norway. President Barack Obama is aware of the process and is in agreement, the Reuters source said.?

According to Colombian newspaper El Espectador, among the central issues going into the talks will be whether the FARC will be granted a political role, whether lands lost during the fighting will be returned to farmers, whether the rebels will lay down their arms, and whether rebel leaders will be subject to extradition.

Notorious druglord arrested, headed to US?

In 1988 former President Andres Pastrana ceded the FARC a safe haven the size of Switzerland to promote talks. The rebels took advantage of the breathing space to train fighters, build more than 25 airstrips to fly drug shipments, and set up prison camps to hold its hostages.?

A Colombian intelligence source told Reuters earlier that as part of the deal to hold talks, Santos had agreed FARC rebels would not be extradited to any other country to stand trial.?

(Link to Spanish-language article in El Espectador)

Colombia's congress passed a constitutional reform in June that set the legal basis for eventual peace with the rebels. The reform prohibits guerrilla leaders accused of crimes against humanity from holding political office.?

Guarded hope
News of the latest peace effort was met with guarded hope among Colombians.?

"Honestly, full peace is probably never possible. Of course it would be good ... but really, an end to the war? I think an end to the world will happen first," said Maria Eugenia Martinez as she sold cigarettes in an upscale Bogota neighborhood.?

Colombians dismantle police post in protest at FARC clashes

Santos discussed the peace process during talks in Havana with Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez and Cuba's former leader Fidel Castro before the Summit of the Americas in Cartagena, Colombia earlier this year, the intelligence source said.?

In a recent interview with Reuters, Santos said he would only start a peace process "with a high probability of success. I would not start a process to fail."?

News of the talks had already angered Santos' predecessor, Alvaro Uribe, who has slammed Santos for wanting "peace at any cost" and allowing the rebels to rearm and regroup.?

Explosion in Bogota kills at least two and injures former interior minister

Santos, a former defense minister, won election in 2010 by a landslide, pledging to cut unemployment and continue Uribe's hard line security policies, while fostering economic growth and reducing poverty.?

While much of the world struggles to shore up fiscal accounts, Colombia's financial management, buoyant economy and security advances have helped shield its economy from too much fallout from the international financial crisis.?

Once an outcast for most foreign companies, the Andean nation has become a magnet for investment as a U.S.-backed offensive against the FARC sharply reduced the number of kidnappings and murders. The nation was rewarded last year with an investment grade from three major credit-rating agencies.?

Romney to make early visit to Florida convention

NEWTON, Massachusetts (Reuters) - Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney will make an early appearance at the Republican national convention in Tampa, Florida, on Tuesday, a campaign official said.

Romney, who had been scheduled to arrive on Thursday ahead of his prime time speech that night, will now fly to Florida the same day his wife, Ann, is scheduled to give her address.

On Sunday and Monday, Romney and his wife were at their home in New Hampshire and made trips to a local high school where they practiced their speeches.

On both days, Romney gushed to reporters about how "terrific" Ann Romney's speech will be.

Romney's schedule has been largely kept secret this week as Republican officials monitored Tropical Storm Isaac, which threatens the Gulf Coast.

Republicans canceled the first day of the convention, which was scheduled to begin on Monday.

Breast Cancer Drug May Ease Prostate Cancer Side Effects

Men undergoing prostate cancer treatment commonly suffer side effects such as the growth of breast tissue or breast pain, but the breast-cancer drug tamoxifen may reduce the risk of these effects, a new review says.

Researchers looked at four studies of men with prostate cancer, and found that men whose treatments were supplemented with tamoxifen?were less likely to have breast enlargement and breast pain than those not taking the drug.

For instance, six months after starting treatment, men who took tamoxifen were 10 percent less likely to have breast enlargement and 6 percent less likely to have breast pain compared with patients not receiving the drug, which counteracts the effects of estrogen on breast tissue.

Tamoxifen prevented these side effects about 20 percent better than other treatments, such as the drug anastrozole, which counteracts estrogen's effects in a different way, the researchers found.

The growth of breast tissue and breast pain has been cited as reasons why men stop their prostate cancer treatments, according to the study.

"If men know that there is a successful option for reducing the breast symptoms associated with treatment for prostate cancer, they may be more likely to see their doctor when symptoms of cancer first appear, and consequently reduce the number of unnecessary deaths," said lead study author Dr. Frank Kunath, of the University Clinic Erlangen in Germany.

Because testosterone can encourage prostate cancer?growth, some treatments are aimed at suppressing testosterone production. As the body tries to produce even more testosterone to counter the drop, some of this testosterone is converted to estrogen, which causes breasttissue to develop and can lead to pain.

"When asking a patient to comply with a regime, you have to think about what the side effects are, and if they will drive a person to stop medication," said Dr. Freya Schnabel, professor and breast surgeon at New York University's Langone Medical Center, who was not involved in the study.

However, Schnabel said, the new review did not include data on how many men consider stopping or actually stop treatment because of these side effects. She added that truly calculating the negative impact of breast growth or breast pain was difficult.

It is logical that tamoxifen could reduce the effects of the estrogen produced during prostate cancer treatment, Schnabel said, though she cautioned that the researchers reviewed only four studies, and further research is needed.

"They're clearly not advocating that every man taking these medications should go on tamoxifen," she said, but the research suggests that taking the drug "may ameliorate their symptoms."

The study was published today (Aug. 27) in the journal BMC Medicine.

Pass it on: Men suffering from breast problems after prostate cancer treatment may find relief in the breast-cancer drug tamoxifen.

Would You Ride This Weird Foot-Powered Bike Thing in Public? [Video]

"Ride" might not even be the right verb here, because the "rider" is strapped in and sort of hangs from the frame. In any case, this contraption, called the Fliz Bike, is a prototype intended to make biking more maneuverable for urban environments. It may succeed at that, but it just looks weird, partly in a cool way, partly in a doofy one. More »

Google's Response to Apple Patent Massacre: Don't Freak Out, Guys [Apple Vs Samsung]

We'd heard Apple and Samsung's responses to Friday's lopsided decision in the pair's patent scuffle fairly quickly. But there was a third party that felt the impact every bit as much as the two litigants: Google. And it had been quiet as a dormouse, until late last night. More »

Explain how panchayat land was handed over to ... - Real Estate India

??|?? August 25, 2012 ?? 02:44pm ??|Contributed by manoja

chandigarh:?The Punjab and Haryana High Court on Thursday came down heavily on the Haryana government, asking it to explain how prime land belonging to panchayats was handed over to private builders in Gurgaon.

?

The court was hearing a petition by Gurgaon villagers, who had alleged that two senior IAS officers had sanctioned the exchange of panchayat land to builders without having the powers to do so. Nearly 150 kanals of prime land in Gurgaon was given to private builders in lieu of infertile land, they had added. When the matter came up for hearing, the Haryana law officer sought time to file response. This, after the government, on the last date of hearing, was given time by the court to file its reply by Thursday.

Apple's Patent Win Could Alter Landscape Of Smartphone Industry ...

Filed by KOSU News in Business.
August 25, 2012

The dust has yet to settle on Apple?s patent lawsuit victory over electronics giant Samsung on Friday. Samsung, who must pay over $1 billion in damages to Apple, has said that it will ask the court to overturn the verdict, but if that proves unsuccessful, will likely appeal to a higher court.

?This decision should not be allowed to stand because it would discourage innovation and limit the rights of consumers to make choices for themselves,? Samsung lead lawyer John Quinn told the Associated Press.

Whether that?s true or not, the verdict sends a message through the smartphone industry that other manufacturers will need to re-think their designs to be less Apple-like, or risk legal repercussions.

Robert W. Dickerson Jr., a lawyer who is the head of the West Coast intellectual property practice for Dickstein Shapiro, a patent law firm not involved in the Samsung-Apple case, told the New York Times that:

?Companies in the future are going to have to consider how much they want their product to look and feel like their competitors? products in terms of shape, size, the way it feels, the way it looks, how the icons are similar, or will the icons be quite dissimilar.?

Additional fallout from the case could be what the Wall Street Journal calls, the Apple tax. Competing device makers would have to license the technologies Apple sought to protect in the suit, which would add to the manufacturing cost of those products.

That additional cost could eventually find its way to consumers.

?During the trial, Apple executives testified that the company was willing to license some of its patents to Samsung. In October 2010, Apple offered to license its portfolio of patents to Samsung provided the Korean company was willing to pay about $30 per smartphone and $40 per tablet.

?

The verdict doesn?t necessarily mean that consumers will end up shelling out more for devices from Samsung or other makers of Android devices that use similar Apple technologies. The potential extra cost could be swallowed in part by manufacturers or wireless carriers. However, [IDC analyst Al Hilwa] said that ?in the end I think the consumer will pay more.??

Though not involved in the lawsuit, Google, maker of the popular Android operating system that powers many smartphones in the marketplace including Samsung?s, was also a target. If other makers of cellphones fear lawsuits from Apple, they could shy away from choosing Android to power their phones.

?It has got to create some concern for that ecosystem,? Baird analyst William Power said. ?The legal risks are bound to make a manufacturer think twice.?

Aside from Apple of course, another big winner in the case could turn out to be Microsoft, according to Mashable?s Peter Pachal. Microsoft?s Windows Phone, produced by partner Nokia, has a distinctly different look and feel than the iPhone and this might be their opportunity to gain some market share.

?Windows Phone is extremely attractive, particularly now. With the launch of Windows 8, Microsoft will unite its desktop/tablet and phone operating systems with shared code. That means it?s going to be incredible easy for developers to make apps that work across all Windows machines. Windows Phone also has a clear hardware leader in Nokia, so other manufacturers will never have to worry about being the only one carrying the torch.

On top of that, the OS is actually good. Windows Phones are generally well reviewed by both influencers and consumers. Criticisms generally focus on the lack of support for better hardware, but Windows Phone 8 will change that. True, its app catalog is nowhere near as robust as iOS?s or Android?s, but that gap could close quickly with the boost it gets from Windows 8 developers.?

Nokia, having been in the cellphone business for a time, also has its own portfolio of patents to protect itself.

A followup preliminary hearing on injunctions based on the verdict is scheduled for September 20. Considering that some of Samsung?s phones that were found to infringe on Apple?s patents are currently on sale, the potential for sale bans is not out of the realm of possibilities.
