San Francisco Writers Conference: Publishing Illustrated Books ...

While you?re reading this I?ll be down at the San Francisco Writers Conference, which is sold out again this year.

Along with literary agent and publishing consultant Peter Beren, I?ll be giving a session on the challenges of publishing illustrated books.

Illustrated books are generally the most difficult to self-publishing because of:

  • technical challenges
  • risk involved in offset printing
  • difficulty of getting the finances to work to your advantage.

But there are a lot of different kinds of illustrated books intended for different markets, and we?re going to explore some of the possibilities that put the leverage back into the self-publisher?s hands.

This subject might seem a bit odd to you, considering this is a writers conference. To me it signals how the writing and publishing functions of the book business keep merging into one another.

Authors today want to look at their book?s potential for self-publishing, and why not? Entrepreneurial authors stand to do very well financially from these books if they have a way to market and sell them.

And the author retains complete control of the project. With illustrated books like those for a gallery or an artist, this can be a critical part of getting the work into print.

I?ll post the graphics used in the presentation as an addition to this blog post tomorrow.

Do you have illustrated books you want to publish?

Md. House passes gay marriage bill

(AP) ? Maryland appears ready to become one of a handful of states in the U.S. to legalize gay marriage after the bill to allow it passed a long-standing hurdle in the Maryland House of Delegates on Friday.

After courting the votes of a couple delegates initially opposed to the measure, House members voted 72-67 to pass the bill. An initial vote count suggested the measure passed with 71 votes, leaving out an affirmative from Delegate John Bohanan.

Next up is the Senate, which handily passed a similar bill last year. Gov. Martin O'Malley sponsored the bill and has pushed for gay marriage to be legalized. Approval would make Maryland the eighth state plus the District of Columbia to legalize the marriages, although opponents have vowed to petition the measure to referendum.

"Today, we took a giant step toward marriage equality becoming law ? and we are in this position due to the unwavering leadership and resolve of Governor O'Malley, Speaker (Michael) Busch and our legislative allies," Joe Solmonese, president of the Human Rights Campaign, said in a statement released Friday.

An amendment from Delegate Tiffany Alston, a Prince George's Democrat who previously opposed to the bill, was accepted by the members, a move opponents suggested secured her vote. It would keep the law from going into effect until any litigation related to a potential voters' referendum on the measure is processed.

The body also added an amendment Thursday evening, altering the effective date from October to January 2013.

Delegate Wade Kach, a Republican from Baltimore County, said earlier in that day that his support was contingent upon that amendment.

Throughout the week, several key lawmakers, including Kach and Republican Delegate Robert Costa, made pronouncements that after personal consideration they would support the legislation.

Opponents say the bill does not adequately protect religious freedoms and would force educators to teach about gay marriage in public schools.

Delegates rejected amendments to create civil unions, allow parents to opt out of education programs that address same-sex relationships, limit marriage for gay couples over 18 and to put the measure directly on the ballot.

Opponents argued that Democrats rushed the measure through without proper consideration of amendments once they knew there would be enough votes.

"We should not use brute force strength on such a weighty issue," said minority leader Anthony O'Donnell, R-Calvert.

Earlier in the week, opposition lawmakers criticized proponents for dragging their feet on the measure in order to have enough time to secure votes.

Why You Should Use VoIP

With today?s advancements in technology, and the constant lowering of prices as technology achieves mass adoption, VoIP is now within easy reach for most businesses?even small businesses. Read on to find out why you should consider switching to VoIP for your phone and office communication systems today.

If you are running a business, then there is no reason you shouldn?t be using Voice-over-IP, or VoIP, to reduce telecommunications cost, streamline operations, and improve the flexibility for your organization today.

VoIP, simply put, allows telephone communications to run over your data network or the Internet. The benefits of this setup are many, and the following are just a few.

  1. VoIP allows companies to maximize investments already made in their network infrastructure. The same network which handles the flow of data such as web access and email can now accommodate voice as well?no need to add and maintain additional wires and devices.
  2. VoIP can allow you to dramatically reduce the cost of communications, especially for interstate or international communications?everything can go through the Internet instead of incurring expensive long distance toll charges.
  3. VoIP allows your employees to be more productive and efficient by giving them the ability to receive and make calls anywhere with a data connection, using their laptop, mobile phone, tablet, or virtually any device connected to the Internet.
  4. VoIP increases the number of features you can use with your phone system. For example, it?s easier to add extensions to your phone. You can provide a local number or extension for all your staff without additional costs or cabling. You can also set up sophisticated auto answering routines and call routing. You can marry voice messages with email and faxes all in one inbox.
  5. You can use VoIP as a tool for real-time collaboration?along with video conferencing and screen sharing. You can employ presence technologies that come standard with VoIP phones and VoIP communication systems. Communicate with colleagues about your presence or receive info on the status and whereabouts of your staff.

Previously, all these benefits were only available with a big price tag and a critical limitation?the unavailability or unreliability of the company?s Internet connection?but not anymore. With the great strides made in technology and the wide availability and affordability of broadband connections over the last few years, VoIP is now readily within reach for many businesses?large or small

VoIP is certainly a technology that has come of age. It?s cheap, ubiquitous, and easy-to-use, and any business should have VoIP in their toolset. If you are interested in learning more about how VoIP can help your business, contact us today to find out more!

Eurozone has one foot in recession (AP)

LONDON ? The 17-nation eurozone has one foot in recession, according to official figures showing the economy contracted 0.3 percent in the final three months of 2011 from the previous quarter, a clear sign that Europe's debt crisis has spared no country in the single currency bloc.

The decline was the first since the second quarter of 2009 and followed a meager 0.1 percent increase in the previous three-month period, Eurostat, the EU's statistics agency, said Wednesday.

The figure was slightly better than expected but shows Europe's economy was hit hard when the debt crisis intensified and threatened to spread to big economies, notably Italy. In November, it appeared likely that the eurozone's third-largest economy would need financial rescue like Greece, Ireland and Portugal.

In a desperate bid to save the euro, Europe's governments agreed to tie their economies more closely together and the European Central Bank offered super-cheap long-term loans to struggling banks. The twin response has helped calm market jitters this year, despite the ongoing confusion over Greece's second bailout.

Whether that was enough to avoid a recession ? technically defined as two consecutive quarters of economic contraction ? remains to be seen.

"It remains conceivable that the euro area might still escape from re-entering technical recession," said James Ashley, senior European economist at RBC Capital Markets.

Recent indicators suggest that after contracting in the fourth quarter, the eurozone economy has recovered its poise.

Nevertheless, many individual countries in the eurozone are back in recession ? Italy, the Netherlands and Belgium, on top of bailed-out Greece and Portugal.

Europe's deteriorating fortunes stand in stark contrast to the performance of the United States, which has seen economic growth slowly recover over the past year and unemployment begin to fall. In the fourth quarter, the U.S. economy grew by 0.7 percent compared with the third quarter, according to Eurostat.

How the global economy fares this year is likely to depend on how Europe deals with the debt crisis. Many institutes, including the International Monetary Fund, think it's the biggest risk to the global economic outlook.

"With Greece still on the edge of disaster and the fiscal crisis deepening, the eurozone economy faces enormous challenges," said Jennifer McKeown, senior European economist at Capital Economics, who is predicting that the eurozone will contract by 1 percent this year and by an even-worse 2.5 percent next.

The quarterly figures from Eurostat were a little better than most analyst predictions of a 0.4 percent drop, but failed to affect markets, which were focused on the possibility that Greece might finally clinch a new bailout deal.

National figures released before the Eurostat data indicated that buoyant investment levels helped France post an unexpected 0.2 percent gain and Germany a lower-than-anticipated 0.2 percent drop.

For 2011 as a whole, the eurozone economy grew by 1.5 percent, while the 27-nation European Union, which includes non-euro countries such as Britain and Sweden, expanded by 1.6 percent.

Obama proposes bringing jobs home from overseas. Would his plan work?

To achieve his goal of 'insourcing,' Obama proposes rewarding firms that create jobs in the US while imposing higher effective taxes on profits earned by overseas operations.

President Obama used a Milwaukee factory Wednesday as the venue to amplify his call for the US to create more manufacturing jobs ? including by enticing companies to move jobs back to the US from overseas.

After years in which American workers faced challenging trends labeled "outsourcing" and "off-shoring," some people use the word "insourcing" to describe this goal.

The president proposed a blend of tax-code carrots and sticks. Companies would face higher effective taxes on profits earned by overseas operations, and Obama proposes using the proceeds to reward firms that create jobs in the US. Obama also outlined what appears to be a tougher stance on enforcing current trade laws against China, a policy that could aid the cause of US-based factories.

Mr. Obama won loud cheers from workers at the Master Lock plant where he spoke. But many independent economists, while applauding the general goals Obama espoused, doubt whether the policies he framed in Milwaukee would work.

?The president is absolutely right to focus on this [manufacturing issue],? says Robert Atkinson, who heads the Information Technology and Innovation Foundation, a policy think tank in Washington. But he says he's ?not really enamored? of Obama's proposals.

A central problem for US manufacturers, Mr. Atkinson says, is that they are currently asked to pay higher tax rates than their overseas competitors. He argues that what's needed is an overhaul of the corporate tax system to bring rates lower, making the US a more attractive place to invest.

Obama, instead, offered proposals that create new incentives for investment at home, but would also penalize multinational manufacturers based in the US:

"No American company should be able to avoid paying its fair share of taxes by moving jobs and profits overseas," Obama said. "From now on, every multinational company should have to pay a basic minimum tax.? And every penny should go towards lowering taxes for companies that choose to stay and hire in the United States of America."

Obama cited Master Lock as an example of a nascent revival for US manufacturing. It has moved about 100 jobs, previously outsourced offshore, back to Milwaukee since the middle of 2010, according to the White House.

Some tax-policy analysts say Obama is right to seek disincentives for firms that shift jobs overseas.

The group Citizens for Tax Justice, for instance, decries a current loophole that allows American corporations to defer US taxes on their offshore profits until those profits are brought home. They pay taxes in the overseas nation. But if they don't "repatriate" the profits, they may avoid the current tax code's goal of having them pay enough US tax to make up the difference between the foreign-country and US-side tax rates.

"This ... provides an incentive for US corporations to shift operations and jobs to a lower tax country, or just use accounting gimmicks to make their US profits appear to be 'foreign' profits," a recent report by Citizens for Tax Justice said.

Other economists, however, say the US needs to tread carefully on tax policy, and that the main problem is that the US corporate tax rates exceed those in other nations.

Gary Hufbauer, at the Peterson Institute for International Economics, says in an audio commentary on the issue that when US firms invest abroad they also tend to create export demand for their products made in the US. If you try to get them to bring their jobs "home," the result may be that they lose a foothold in foreign markets, which can ultimately benefit US workers.

Currently, US corporations pay an effective tax rate of about 27 percent of profits, compared with an average of about 20 percent for many other advanced nations, Mr. Hufbauer says. If that tax-rate gap persists, and if the US cracked down on the deferral loophole, it might encourage more US firms to be bought by corporations based overseas, over time, to get around the higher tax.

Atkinson says Obama is "long overdue" in pursuing tougher enforcement of trade laws against China.

AU forces capture rebel strongholds near Somali capital (Reuters)

MOGADISHU (Reuters) ? African Union troops launched an offensive against al Qaeda-linked Somali rebels and captured strongholds to the south of the capital Mogadishu, the AU force said on Tuesday.

The Burundian contingent of the AU's peacekeeping force (AMISOM) overpowered the rebels after a fierce gun battle in which 10 rebels were killed and two AU soldiers injured, said the acting AU troops commander, Brigadier General Audace Nduwumunsi.

He said the push was part of the force's efforts to secure the Somali capital by cutting off the al Shabaab's ability to infiltrate and mount attacks on the city and its people.

The troops took Al Janal hill near the city's main airport as well as the Maslah building that sits on the road to Afgoye, an al Shabaab stronghold, he said.

"Operations are ongoing to expand the zone of security in Mogadishu," Nduwumunsi said in a statement.

However, officials at Al Shabaab denied the claim that their strongholds had been captured by the AU forces, and said they had killed AU soldiers during the fighting.

"We killed 7 Burundians in today's fighting," Sheikh Abdiasis Abu Musab, the spokesman for al Shabaab's military operation, told Reuters. "AMISOM is lying, they have not captured our positions," he added.

Al Shabaab, which wants to impose its harsh interpretation of sharia, the Islamic moral and legal code, relinquished control of the coastal capital in August, under pressure from

AMISOM.

The Islamist fighters have since then shifted to towns outside the capital and switched their tactics to guerrilla-style warfare, using roadside bombs, grenade attacks and hit-and-run raids against government installations in Mogadishu.

Roads leading to al Shabaab-controlled towns of Afgoi, Elasha, Lafole, and Km 13, a small town located a short distance south of Mogadishu, were cut off by the fighting, residents said.

Ali Musa, a rescue official, said access from the southern towns to Mogadishu had been cut off.

"Shells have landed on Km 13 and near Elasha town. Most of the people are on board mini-buses. We are fleeing and yet we have no way out," he said.

The rebels continue to hold swathes of central and southern Somalia but are being squeezed out of some areas by Kenyan and Ethiopian troops, which have launched incursions inside Somalia in support of the beleaguered government.

Somalia descended into chaos in 1991 after dictator Siad Barre was overthrown.

How are nonverbal signals sent by casual dress in the workplace?
The phenomenon of casual dress in the business place has come full circle. Many companies are now moving away from casual dress. Many business leaders have come to realize that the nonverbal signals sent by casual dress, conflict with the image the company is attempting to portray. ? A trend that was seeing more and more companies opting for casual dress, now has companies considering a complete withdraw from this popular business fashion. Companies will need to completely overhaul their dress codes if casual dress is to survive.
The History
The concept of business casual dress began in the early 1990?s in Silicon Valley, California. In the beginning, it was a method of getting out of those hot suits in the summer, allowing people to be more comfortable in their work environment. It was expanded

to console or placate workers during hard times. ?Casual Fridays were introduced, experts say, to improve morale among cynical white-collar folks who saw their coworkers falling like flies during the layoffs of the 1980s and early 1990s. Generally, the casual look was never meant to replace traditional Monday-through-Thursday business attire? (McPherson, p. 134). Business casual was hyped as an employee benefit.
The casual experiment quickly gained popularity. ? The attitudes toward casual dress began as positive and at its peak in the mid 1990?s the business industry reported that 63.7% of all businesses were allowing some form of casual dress (Cotton, Inc., 1997).
Positive Thinking
Whether true or perceived, some businesses and workers have stated a positive outcome to casual dress. ?Some of the more commonly touted benefits include improved employee morale, a lack of cost to the employer, increased worker productivity, more open communication between staff and managers, cost savings to?

Foot Care ? The Importance Of Foot Hygiene In Foot Health

Foot health is an issue that many people try to avoid. The foot is hardly a body part that we normally associate with the words beautiful and sexy. The foot is usually protected from the outside world through a pair of socks and shoes.

When it comes to the Winter Olympics, the first thing to remember is that these athletes are doing in cold conditions. Whenever it?s cold outside of your body is kept warm by constriction of surface blood vessels of the extremities to push more warm blood to vital internal organs. So when it?s cold out you are more likely to get frostbite in the fingers, toes, ears and nose, then any other area of your body.

The bacteria eats the sweat excreted waste that has a strong odor and bad. The odor is hard to get rid of him. Bacteria found in the skin of our body is quite normal. Constant showers every few hours could eliminate a large amount of this bacteria, but just returned.

Feel exactly where your toes girl using her fingers to find their shoes. At least of an inch of space should be between the end of the shoe and the end of your child?s finger. width test by feeling along the sides of a shoe in the ball area, ensuring the free space between the sides of the shoe and the sides of the foot. In addition, they feel both sides of a shoe, at the same time.

Who says that a diabetic patient can not have a relaxing foot spa? Using a pumice stone to smooth corns and calluses thick is proven safe and effective health needs of the feet. Just note that you have to use this care.

Athlete?s foot can be prevented by washing your feet and dry them well, and wearing shoes made of materials that ?breathe?, such as leather. foot powder helps a lot, too. If I succeed, use anti-fungal cream, never topical steroids, which allow the fungus to multiply. A home remedy is to submerge your feet in a solution of one part vinegar and four parts water.

Walking provides great exercise for your feet and help to improve circulation and prevent blood pooling in your ankles. Swimming is also great exercise, but be careful in the locker room ? these are known breeding grounds for infections of the feet!

Gayety united in marriage push : Christian Community for Christian ...

There was a recent discussion on Signposts02 about whether the homosexual lobbyists had an agenda.?It was generally suggested by the liberal voices that they did not.

This, of course would mean that their decision making processes are random an uncoordinated, which isn?t really borne out by the evidence.

The lobbyists are, in fact, very well organised in a defined collaboration. As God once said about men who had a will opposed to His own, ?since they are unified, there is nothing they may not accomplish?, and this is true of gay and lesbian activism for at least the last two or three decades, as pointed out by Kevin Donnelly in an article in the ABC?s Drum Opinion pages, which I reproduce in full for your commentary:

Marriage equality: secrets behind a successful campaign.
Kevin Donnelly

Dennis Altman, in a comment piece for yesterday?s The Age in response to the ALP conference?s decision on gay marriage writes:

?The campaign for marriage equality, largely run by younger women and men, not all of them gay, is one of the most successful examples of effective lobbying in Australia over the past few decades.?

Altman is correct. The questions social conservatives need to ask, though, are why has the cultural-left been so successful in shaping the public debate and why have we reached a stage where many expect that the Australian Parliament, in the near future, will radically redefine the definition of marriage?

One of the key strategies used by the left in the culture wars is to take a medium to long-term view and to embark on what the Italian Marxist Antonio Gramsci describes as the long march through the institutions. Beginning in the late ?60s and early ?70s, institutions like schools and universities, churches, government bureaucracies, political organisations and media outlets were targeted as key sites in the battle of ideology and ideas.

One only needs to look at universities, in Australia and the US, where the majority of academics describe themselves as left-of-centre and most journalists and reporters are happy to espouse politically correct causes to realise how successful the left has been.

A second strategy employed by the cultural-left is to define once-accepted practices and ideas as obsolete, socially unjust, inequitable and ripe for change.

Radical feminists argue that traditional forms of marriage institutionalise rape, education is defined as an instrument used by the ruling class to exploit and marginalise the dispossessed, Christianity is described as irrational and based on superstition and Western civilisation is attacked for being exploitive, eurocentric and elitist.

As noted by George Orwell, language is a powerful weapon in the battle of ideas and it is here that the cultural-left has also been successful. Whereas the ability to discriminate was once considered a worthy attribute, to be guilty of discrimination is now a crime. To be conservative, on the basis that there are some things from the past that are worthwhile holding on to, is to be old-fashioned, out of touch and guilty of continuing past injustices.

Those critical of feminism are labelled as misogynist, those who view gay/lesbian practices as unacceptable are condemned as homophobic and anyone championing the traditional form of marriage based on heterosexuality is guilty of discrimination and failing to respect the rights of others. It?s no accident that homosexuals and lesbians have co-opted the word gay to describe what many consider an unnatural lifestyle.

Gender politics provides a compelling example of how the cultural-left has managed to win the culture wars and radically redefine once accepted practices and social mores. In relation to gays and lesbians, even though one Australian survey suggested that only 1.6 per cent of men and 0.8 per cent of women identify as gay/lesbian, activists have been successful in presenting such relationships as increasingly widespread and normal.

Since the late ?80s and early ?90s groups like the Australian Education Union (AEU) and the Australian Association for the Teachers of English (AATE) have ensured that the nation?s classroom and the school curriculum enforce a cultural-left view of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender (GLBT) issues.

The AEU?s policy is that lessons about GLBT life-styles and issues must be ?positive in its approach? and that the ?sexual orientation and/or gender-preferred identity of individual teachers should not be a factor in determining which teachers are able to teach sex, health or human biology education?.

At AATE conferences and in journals over the years English teachers have been told that they should help children recognise the ?various ways in which gender categories are tied to an oppressive binary structure for organising the social and cultural practices of adolescent boys and girls?, use the classroom to explore ?alternative versions of masculinity? and ?recognise that gender is a social construction organised upon unequal power relations which define and limit opportunities?.

Such has been the cultural-left?s success in relation to gender issues that the so-called Melbourne Declaration, the blue print for Australian school education, argues that all school sectors, faith based, independent and government, must provide an education free of discrimination based on gender and sexual orientation.

A strict interpretation of the Melbourne Declaration is that religious schools will lose the freedom they currently have to discriminate in relation to who they enrol and who they employ. One also expects that the proposed national curriculum, in areas like health, will enforce a positive view of GLBT issues.

Currently, school programs like Victoria?s ?Supporting Sexual Diversity in Schools? and the NSW ?Proud Schools? are being funded to fight against homophobia and transphobia on the basis that children must be taught to celebrate diversity and difference and that all forms of sexual identity must be equally valued.

To return to last weekend?s ALP conference. The battle over the meaning of the word marriage provides a good example of Orwell?s belief that how we use language defines who and what we are and the type of society we live in. The Shorter Oxford dictionary defines marriage as firstly, ?The relation between married persons; wedlock? and, secondly, ?The action, or an act, of marrying; the ceremony by which two persons are made husband and wife?.

Even though it is increasingly common for homosexuals and lesbians to have the right to a civil union, thus, having the same rights as married people, such is not enough. By changing the definition of marriage activists not only want to radically redefine the meaning of the word so that it becomes unrecognisable ? which raises the problem that if marriage is now to include gays and lesbians, what right do we have to exclude bisexual and transgender people?

Homosexual and lesbian activists are also seeking to gain the same type of respect and acceptance reserved for marriages involving heterosexual couples, something, by definition, that they currently lack.

Dr Kevin Donnelly?is Director of Melbourne-based Education Standards Institute.

FWC promotes boat ramp database : Outdoors & Recreation ...

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) introduced a new feature on its website this week. Users can now view and search a database of Florida boat ramps.

?Providing safe, convenient access to Florida?s waterways is one of our goals,? said Pat Harrell, the FWC?s Boating Access Coordinator. ?This database is designed to help keep boaters informed about facilities that are currently available.?

Boaters can visit the Public Boat Ramp Finder site to locate and obtain details for more than 1,600 publicly accessible boat ramps.

?People can look for boat ramps within a certain county, on a lake they?d like to visit or even search for boat ramps near a specific street address or GPS coordinates,? Harrell said. ?The database provides a map, details and often photos of the ramps.?

The database was created from an inventory conducted for the Statewide Boating Access Inventory and Economic Assessment. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service provided funding through the Wildlife and Sport Fish Restoration?s Boating Access Program. Working with boating access management partners, including Florida?s counties and the Department of Environmental Protection, the FWC identified and indexed approximately 3,440 boat ramps around the state.

To access the database, visit MyFWC.com/Boating.

To help the FWC improve and update this database, the public is asked to email BoatRamps@MyFWC.com to report errors or new information.

Oil prices rise after US supply report (AP)

NEW YORK ? Oil prices are slightly higher Wednesday following government reports that U.S. supplies didn't grow as much as expected last week.

Benchmark U.S. crude rose by 18 cents to $98.59 per barrel in New York. Brent crude, which is used to price foreign oil varieties, rose by 29 cents to $116.52 per barrel in London.

The Energy Information Administration reported that the nation's crude supplies increased by 300,000 barrels last week, much less than the increase of 2.25 million barrels analysts expected.

Analysts were betting that refineries would continue to replenish stockpiles as they usually do in the first few months of the year. But last week they also cut back on imports as oil and gasoline demand dropped.

The EIA said that U.S. petroleum demand fell by 4.8 percent to a four-week average of 18.1 million barrels per day. That's the weakest four-week average since April 1997, said Tom Kloza, publisher and chief oil analyst at Oil Price Information Service.

Oil prices had risen earlier in the day, to above $100 per barrel, following an industry survey that predicted supplies would move in the opposite direction, dropping by 4.5 million barrels. The EIA report countered that.

"That took the wind out of the sails" of energy commodities, said Gene McGillian, a broker and oil analyst at Tradition Energy.

Meanwhile, doubts about Greece's ability to follow through with spending cuts and other austerity measures necessary to avoid bankruptcy pushed the dollar higher. Oil, which is priced in dollars, tends to drop in value as the dollar rises and makes crude more expensive for investors holding foreign money.

Retail gasoline prices were essentially unchanged Wednesday at a national average of $3.48 per gallon, according to AAA, Wright Express and Oil Price Information Service. Gasoline is at the highest price ever for this time of year. A gallon of regular is 11 cents higher than a month ago and 37 cents higher than at the same time last year.

In other energy trading, heating oil fell by a penny to $3.18 per gallon, while gasoline futures rose by about 1 cent to $2.94 per gallon. Natural gas futures rose by a penny to $2.48 per 1,000 cubic feet.

China sees "trust deficit" before Xi's U.S. trip (Reuters)

BEIJING (Reuters) ? China and the United States suffer a "trust deficit" that Vice President Xi Jinping's trip to Washington could help ease, a Chinese diplomat said in a speech published on Tuesday, playing down Chinese fears about a U.S. "pivot" towards Asia.

China's president-in-waiting, Xi, will visit the United States starting next Tuesday, going to the farming state of Iowa where he stayed briefly in 1985 and to Los Angeles, the Chinese Foreign Ministry said, confirming an earlier statement from the White House.

The speech by China's Vice Foreign Minister Cui Tiankai was the latest sign that Beijing wants Xi's visit to keep to an upbeat tone, despite frictions that trouble relations, most recently over its decision to veto a U.N. Security Council resolution on the increasingly bloody conflict in Syria.

But Cui said mutual misgivings have clouded relations between the world's two biggest economies, despite deep trade ties and greater foreign policy dialogue.

"There is certainly a trust deficit between China and the United States," Cui said in the speech in Shanghai on Monday that was posted on the Chinese Foreign Ministry's website (www.mfa.gov.cn).

"Each time the Sino-U.S. relationship hits problems, there are voices that fundamentally doubt the relationship. There are constantly those who want to overturn this relationship that can truly be called too big to fail," said Cui, whose portfolio includes overseeing ties with the United States.

"Therefore, nurturing and deepening mutual trust remains a major issue that both sides must give full attention to and seriously address," he added.

Xi's visit to the United States, including a meeting with President Barack Obama at the White House on Tuesday, appears unlikely to bring big advances on Syria, Iran and other sources of friction, including trade imbalances and human rights.

Xi will also visit Turkey and Ireland after the United States, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Liu Weimin told a daily briefing. He did not give specific dates for each stop.

For Xi, the U.S. visit will be a major step in signaling his readiness to take over as China's next top leader. His growing prominence indicates he is virtually certain to replace Hu Jintao as Communist Party chief late this year and then as state president in early 2013.

Xi could help counter some of the distrust, Cui suggested.

"We hope that both sides will seize on this visit as an opportunity to enhance communication, expand cooperation and deepen friendship," said Cui.

He did not mention Syria, and nor did he directly mention the Obama administration's "pivot" to bolster the U.S. economic and military presence in Asia, which some critics in China have called a strategy to fence in their country.

But Cui stressed that China did not see conflict over regional influence as inevitable.

"The Asia-Pacific is big enough to accommodate both China and the United States," he said. "There's great potential for cooperation, and the key lies in mustering enough political will."

Iranians bemoan sanctions hardship as vote approaches (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? Each day that he struggles to buy food for his family, vegetable seller Hasan Sharafi shoulders part of the burden of Iran's defiance of the West over its nuclear programme. He can hardly bear it.

"Prices are going up every day, life is expensive. I buy chicken or meat once per month. I used to buy it twice per week," the father of four said in Iran's central city of Isfahan.

"Sometimes I want to kill myself. I feel desperate. I do not earn enough to feed my children."

With just a month to go before a parliamentary election, Iran has been hit hard in recent months by new U.S. and European economic sanctions over its nuclear programme, which Tehran says is peaceful but the West says is aimed at making a bomb.

In conversations in towns and cities across Iran, people complained of rapidly deteriorating economic conditions, likely to be the main issue in an election that exposes divisions between President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and hardline opponents.

The last time Iranians voted, in a 2009 presidential election, Ahmadinejad's disputed victory triggered eight months of violent street demonstrations. The authorities successfully put down that uprising by force, but since then the Arab Spring has demonstrated the vulnerability of governments in the region to uprisings fuelled by anger over economic difficulty.

"My father lost his job because the factory he used to work for 30 years was closed last month. I am so pessimistic. Why is this happening to us?" lamented mathematics student Behnaz in the northern city of Rasht.

"I don't know whether the prices are rising because of sanctions. The only thing that I know is that our lives are ruined. I have no hope for the future."

Iran's leaders deny that sanctions are having an economic impact, but are also calling for solidarity in the face of them. In a defiant speech on Friday, Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei told Iranians sanctions would make them stronger.

"Such sanctions will benefit us. They will make us more self reliant," he said in a televised address marking the anniversary of Iran's 1979 revolution. "Sanctions will not have any impact on our determination to continue our nuclear course."

BREAD ON THE TABLE

Such rhetoric resonates with some Iranians, who say they are willing to endure pain to defend a nuclear programme that has become a symbol of national pride.

"America uses the nuclear issue as an excuse to replace our regime with a puppet regime to control our energy resources. But we will not let them. Nuclear technology is our right and I fully support our leaders' view. Death to America," said student Mohammad Reza Khorrami in the northern town of Chalous.

But the West is hoping sanctions will turn ordinary Iranians against their leaders, and there are clear signs of discontent. When you ask Iranians about the nuclear issue, many seem to see it as a distraction from the real question of economic hardship.

"I am not a politician. I don't care about the nuclear dispute. Soon, I might not be able to afford food and other basic needs of my children," said Mitra Zarrabi, a schoolteacher and mother of three.

"What is the nuclear dispute? Don't waste my time asking irrelevant questions," said 62-year-old peddler Reza Zohrabi in a marketplace overflowing with imported Chinese goods in the city of Kashan. "I'm not interested in talking about politics and the nuclear issue. I have to find ways to put bread on my family's table."

Iranian authorities say 15 percent of the country's workforce is unemployed. Many formal jobs pay a pittance, meaning the true figure of people without adequate work to support themselves is probably far higher.

Hemmat Ghorban, 32, sits in a square in Mashhad city with a group of men, waiting to get work as day construction workers.

"I used to sell fruit in a small shop in Zanjan city," said Ghorban, who was forced to close his shop because of the increasing rent and high price of materials.

"Today I earned nothing. How am I going to support my family? Soon my family will be homeless. Sometimes I go without work for three or four days."

The new sanctions include measures signed into law by President Barack Obama on New Year's Eve that would ban any institution dealing with Iran's central bank from the U.S. financial system.

If fully implemented, the law would effectively make it impossible for countries to pay for Iranian oil. Washington is imposing the sanctions gradually and offering waivers to prevent chaos on international energy markets, but countries seeking those permits are expected to reduce trade with Iran over time.

The European Union, which collectively bought about a fifth of Iran's 2.6 million barrels per day of oil exports last year, has announced it will halt Iranian crude imports. Other countries are scrambling to comply with U.S. and EU measures.

Since the sanctions have only begun to bite, far greater pain is looming. Oil is 60 percent of Iran's economy. Much of its food and animal feed are imported, and many of its factories assemble goods from imported parts.

Already, ships bringing grain have been turning back from Iranian ports because Tehran cannot pay suppliers: an agricultural consultancy said maize imports from Ukraine - a major source of animal feed - fell 40 percent last month.

China, Iran's biggest trade partner, cut its purchases of Iranian oil by half in January and February this year, and is seeking steeper discounts for the oil that it does buy. Turkey wants a discounted price for gas.

Such discounts mean that even if it does manage to thwart sanctions and find buyers for its energy exports, Iran's revenue will be hurt. It relies on oil exports to buy goods to feed its 74 million people and pay for subsidies to keep prices low.

People have been queuing at banks to withdraw their savings and buy hard currency, even though banks have increased interest rates on savings to 20 percent from 12 percent.

Currency exchange shops are refusing to sell dollars at official rates, forcing people to the black market where the rial has lost more than half its value in the past two months.

For those who link the hardship to international sanctions, the most vivid example is neighboring Iraq, where an embargo imposed between 1991 and the U.S. invasion in 2003 reduced a wealthy oil exporting country to dire poverty.

"I don't want Iran to become like Iraq before America's invasion. With the sanctions, soon we will have problems finding essential goods and even medicine," said 31-year-old teacher Rokhsareh Sharafoleslam in Chalous.

Reformist candidates are largely barred from standing in Iran's parliamentary election, which will put Ahmadinejad - known in the West as a hardliner - against opponents that are even more conservative. The election will largely be a referendum on Ahmadinejad's economic policies, which his opponents blame for the economic disarray.

For decades, Iran has used its oil wealth to provide the public with lavish subsidies for goods. Ahmadinejad has been cutting those subsidies, replacing them with direct payments to citizens of around $110 a month for a family of four.

His hardline political opponents say the payments are a bribe to win support from voters and have fueled inflation.

Analyst Hamid Farahvashian said the payments could nevertheless win voter support for the president.

"The lower-income people in villages and small towns can live on that money. So, Ahmadinejad's camp basically will win their votes in parliamentary polls."

INFLATION, UNEMPLOYMENT

Iran's annual official inflation rate is running around 20 percent but economists and some lawmakers say it is really around 50 percent. Prices for bread, dairy, rice, vegetables and cooking fuel have soared. A traditional Iranian loaf of "sangak" bread costs 30 percent more than a few months ago.

"We are worried and afraid. I feel depressed when I think about future of my children. What might happen if America and other countries impose further sanctions on Iran?" said a housewife in Kermanshah, who declined to give her name.

Reza Khaleghi, who owns a small grocery store in the central city of Karaj near Tehran, said gloomily: "Because of sanctions prices are increasing almost every day. The purchasing power of people is nose-diving."

Since 2010, subsidy cutbacks have tripled the price of electricity, water and natural gas used for factories, cooking and heating homes. Soaring costs caused the closure of at least 1,800 small factories in Tehran province alone, according to Iranian media.

On a bus from Mashhad to the nearby town of Quchan, people spoke of little else but inflation.

"Prices are increasing by the hour. My husband and I cannot afford starting a family as life is so expensive," said Mahla Aref, a government employee.

Small businesses say they are struggling to operate as the falling currency raises the cost of goods.

"Business is almost dead. People only buy essential basics," said Khosro Sadegi, who plans to shut down his electronics and appliance shop in the town of Sari.

"Because of rial fluctuations we have to increase prices and people just don't buy anything anymore."
