Efforts of the BC Cancer Agency and other advocacy groups tasted success when the BC government announced that next spring will witness publically funded colorectal cancer screening program in the province.
For many years, the groups were asking the government to come up with the screening program, which is present in other provinces as well. The government was under a lot of pressure and it seems that the pressure has worked well.
Two benefits will be derived by people in the province by having the screening program. The first advantage is more number of elderly will be able to get them screened once in two years. The second plus point will be that the cancer will be timely detected and treatment could be started accordingly.
A pilot project was being run, which included 1,500 people. Out of the total number, 45 cancers were being detected and a number of pre-cancer polyps were also detected. Even, a study presented in the Canadian Medical Association Journal has concluded that screening programs are beneficial for the province.
Health Minister Margaret MacDiarmid said, "This new program recognizes that family physicians are key influencers for patients in deciding to participate in cancer screening programs".
